As Liverpool FC continue to push through a busy period of the season, the return of Alexander Isak could not have come at a better time.
With Liverpool competing across multiple competitions, having attacking depth is crucial. Recently, much of the responsibility up front has fallen on Hugo Ekitike, but the young striker has found things a little more difficult in recent matches.
Ekitike Facing a Tough Spell
Ekitike showed promising form earlier in the season and has worked hard to lead the line for Liverpool. His movement and willingness to press defenders have suited the team’s style of play.
However, like many young strikers, he has experienced a dip in form recently. Goals have been harder to come by, and defenders have started paying closer attention to his runs and positioning.
That is not unusual for a player still developing his game, but it does highlight the importance of having alternative options in attack.
Isak Brings Fresh Energy
The return of Alexander Isak could therefore be perfectly timed. The Swedish forward offers something slightly different in attack, with his combination of pace, technical ability and composure in front of goal.
Isak is capable of stretching defences with his movement while also linking play with Liverpool’s attacking midfielders and wide players.
His presence could help relieve some of the pressure on Ekitike while also giving Liverpool another genuine goal threat.
Competition Can Improve Both Players
Healthy competition for places is often one of the best ways to improve performance within a squad. With Isak returning to contention, Ekitike will know he must fight for his place in the starting lineup.
At the same time, having two quality strikers available gives Liverpool more tactical flexibility depending on the opposition.
A Boost for Liverpool’s Attack
With important fixtures approaching, Liverpool will need every attacking option available. The timing of Isak’s return could therefore prove extremely valuable as the team looks to maintain momentum.
If he can quickly regain match sharpness, Alexander Isak may provide exactly the spark Liverpool’s attack needs at a crucial stage of the season.
