This season has highlighted a growing issue at Liverpool FC — the squad simply does not have enough depth or quality rotation options.
Too many key players have been asked to play almost every match, and the effects are beginning to show as the season reaches its most demanding period.
Key Players Overworked
Several Liverpool players have been relied upon heavily throughout the campaign. Players such as Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo have all been used repeatedly because there are simply not enough reliable alternatives in the squad.
In modern football, where teams compete across multiple competitions and play every few days, rotation is essential. Without it, fatigue builds, performances drop, and injuries become more likely.
That is exactly what Liverpool appear to be experiencing.
Lack of Rotation Options
The problem is not just the number of players in the squad — it’s the lack of genuine quality options capable of stepping in without weakening the team.
When players are unavailable or need rest, the drop-off in quality becomes noticeable. This leaves the manager with little choice but to continue relying on the same core group week after week.
Over time, this inevitably leads to tired performances and inconsistent results.
Summer Recruitment Is Essential
If Liverpool want to compete at the highest level again, strengthening the squad this summer must be a priority.
Adding quality players who can genuinely challenge for starting positions would allow proper rotation and keep the squad fresh throughout the season.
Depth is no longer a luxury for top clubs — it is a necessity.
A Key Factor Behind This Season’s Struggles
Liverpool’s struggles this season cannot be blamed on one single factor. But the thinness of the squad has clearly played a major role.
When the same players are repeatedly pushed to their limits, performances inevitably suffer. If the club wants to avoid the same situation next season, significant reinforcement will be needed in the summer transfer window.
For Liverpool, improving squad depth may prove just as important as signing star players.
