Andrew Robertson has said he will make a decision about his future before the World Cup, and it’s fair to say he has absolutely earned the right to leave Liverpool on his own terms if that’s what he decides.
Since arriving at Liverpool F.C., Robertson has been one of the best signings the club has made in the modern era. He came in for a relatively small fee, worked his way into the team, and became one of the best left-backs in the world during Liverpool’s most successful period in recent years.
He has won major trophies, captained the side at times, and has always given everything on the pitch. Players like that earn respect from supporters, and that’s why many fans feel he should be allowed to decide his own future rather than be pushed out.
At the same time, many Liverpool fans would be delighted if he stayed for another season or two. Even if he is not playing every single game, his experience, leadership and mentality around the dressing room are extremely valuable, especially if the club is going through a period of change with new players coming in.
When players like Robertson leave, they are very difficult to replace — not just because of ability, but because of character and leadership.
Whatever he decides before the World Cup, Robertson will leave Liverpool as one of the most respected players of the modern era at the club. But for now, many supporters will be hoping he decides that his story at Anfield isn’t finished just yet.
