Former Liverpool FC defender Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back in his assessment of the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
In a brutally honest verdict, Carragher admitted:
“That was like watching a team from a lower division.”
“The Gulf In Class Was Worrying”
Carragher’s comments highlight just how far off the pace Liverpool looked on the night.
He went even further, suggesting:
“In some ways, it’s a great result as it should have been five or six.”
That says everything about the performance.
Liverpool weren’t just beaten — they were outplayed, outworked, and at times completely overwhelmed.
Tactical Gamble Backfires
Carragher also pointed the finger at Arne Slot, criticising the tactical approach.
“The manager has tried something but he’s got it massively wrong tactically.”
The decision to switch system, including the use of a back five, was meant to bring control — but instead seemed to create more problems.
More Open With A Back Five?
Perhaps the most damning part of Carragher’s analysis was his breakdown of the system:
“They were actually more open with the back five than they would be with the back four.”
Liverpool’s man-to-man approach left huge spaces, forcing defenders — including Virgil van Dijk — to cover far too much ground.
Against a side like PSG, that was always going to be risky.
A Night To Forget
For Liverpool, this was more than just a defeat.
It was:
A tactical plan that didn’t work A performance lacking intensity A display that raised serious concerns
Reality Check
Carragher’s comments may be harsh — but they reflect what many fans were thinking.
Liverpool were fortunate to only lose 2-0.
And if they are to have any chance in the second leg, there needs to be a major rethink — both tactically and mentally.
