Liverpool Declined Arne Slot’s Request to Bring Back John Heitinga

8 Mar

Reports have emerged that Arne Slot wanted to bring John Heitinga back into his coaching staff at Liverpool FC following Heitinga’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Liverpool’s hierarchy ultimately decided not to approve the move, believing that introducing a new coach this late in the season could cause unnecessary disruption to the current setup.

Slot is believed to rate Heitinga highly and was keen to reunite with the Dutch coach. The two share a strong footballing understanding, and Slot reportedly felt Heitinga could add valuable tactical input to Liverpool’s coaching team.

What makes the decision feel slightly strange to some observers is that Heitinga was already part of the coaching group that helped Liverpool win the league last season. Having previously worked within the structure and experienced success with the squad, it would not have been a completely new voice entering the dressing room.

Because of that, many fans might feel it would have made sense for the club to back their manager’s request, especially given Slot clearly trusts Heitinga and believes he could improve the coaching setup.

Instead, Liverpool’s leadership chose to prioritise stability behind the scenes as the season enters its decisive stage. Their view appears to be that maintaining continuity with the current staff is the safest option during the run-in.

While the decision does not necessarily close the door on Heitinga returning in the future, it does highlight an interesting moment where the club hierarchy opted not to support a request from the manager in order to avoid mid-season disruption.

Whether that proves to be the right call will likely depend on how Liverpool’s season finishes.

why wouldn’t they bring him back? Unless they’re planning on changing the coaching set up at the end of the season.

My thoughts exactly. They are probably not sure if they will keep Slot and his team come end of the season.
