In a major development, reports claim Alexander Isak will not feature again for Liverpool this season.
According to Graham at The Telegraph, the decision is not injury-related, but instead part of an agreement between Liverpool and Sweden to keep the striker fully fit ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
If true, it brings an early end to what has been an incredibly frustrating first season at Liverpool for Isak.
After arriving with huge expectations, the Swedish forward has struggled through a campaign heavily disrupted by injuries, including recovering from a serious leg break alongside several smaller fitness problems throughout the year.
Every time he looked close to building momentum, another setback seemed to arrive.
The news is also a major blow to Liverpool’s attacking options for the final games of the season.
With Champions League qualification still not fully secured, many supporters would have hoped Isak could still play some part before the campaign ends.
Instead, it now appears the focus has shifted entirely towards protecting his fitness for international duty.
That decision may frustrate some Liverpool fans, especially given the importance of the remaining matches.
But after the injuries Isak has already suffered this season, the club may simply feel there is too much risk involved in pushing him again before the summer.
It also raises bigger questions about Liverpool’s attacking depth going forward.
Too often this season, Liverpool have looked short of reliable options in forward areas, particularly when injuries hit.
And with Isak now seemingly finished for the campaign, the spotlight will fall even more heavily on the likes of Mohamed Salah and the rest of Liverpool’s available attackers to carry the load in the final weeks.
For Isak personally, the hope now will simply be to fully recover, get a proper pre-season behind him and finally show Liverpool supporters what he is really capable of next year.
Because this season has simply never really got going for him.
