Steven Gerrard has reportedly opened up on Xabi Alonso’s decision to join Chelsea — and his comments will only deepen the frustration many Liverpool supporters are already feeling.
According to Gerrard, he personally spoke with Alonso before the deal was finalised and urged him to remain patient because he genuinely believed Liverpool would eventually move for him.
Gerrard reportedly said:
“I spoke with Xabi before everything was finalised and told him to be patient because I genuinely believed Liverpool would step in at the right moment.
Everyone knows what he means to this club. The fans love him, he understands the culture, and it felt like the perfect reunion waiting to happen.”
For many Liverpool fans, that perfectly sums up why this situation hurts so much.
Alonso never felt like just another managerial target.
He felt like the natural next chapter.
A former Liverpool midfielder, hugely respected by supporters and one of the brightest coaches in European football.
But Gerrard also reportedly admitted football does not wait around for sentiment.
“But football moves quickly and if you hesitate, you lose opportunities like that.
What frustrates me most is that Liverpool didn’t act fast enough and Chelsea got the deal done before anything could change.”
That line will probably resonate strongly with supporters frustrated by what they see as indecision from Liverpool’s hierarchy during one of the most important moments the club has faced in years.
Especially after such a disappointing season under Arne Slot.
Gerrard also made clear Alonso had already fully committed himself once the decision was made.
“And I have to respect Xabi because he told me clearly he had already made his decision. Once a player says that, there’s nothing more you can do.”
Perhaps the most painful part though was Gerrard’s final reflection:
“Still, it hurts. Because you don’t often get chances to bring someone like him back into your club.
In football, timing is everything and Liverpool missed that moment.”
Whether supporters agree or not, there is no doubt the idea of Alonso managing Liverpool captured the imagination of the fanbase.
And if he goes on to succeed at Chelsea while Liverpool continue to struggle, these comments from Gerrard will only become even more difficult for supporters to hear in the years ahead.
