Respected football journalist Henry Winter has delivered a balanced but powerful verdict on Mohamed Salah’s recent comments about Liverpool — arguing the Egyptian both cares deeply about the club and has every right to criticise what he is seeing.
Salah’s emotional “heavy metal” message sparked huge debate across football, with some accusing him of selfishness while others praised him for publicly demanding higher standards.
Winter believes the reality is somewhere in the middle.
According to Winter, it is entirely possible that Salah’s comments were both personal and genuine concern for Liverpool’s future.
After years of service and success at Anfield, Salah clearly feels emotionally invested in the club and frustrated by the direction things have gone this season.
At the same time, Winter also acknowledges that Salah is aware of the impact his words carry — especially when shared publicly with his enormous audience.
Winter pointed out that Salah could have raised his concerns privately with the Liverpool hierarchy.
But by posting the message to his 62 million Instagram followers, the forward wanted everyone to understand exactly how strongly he feels about the club’s decline and the loss of identity within the team.
And whether supporters agree with his approach or not, the post has undeniably shaken Liverpool.
One of Winter’s most striking observations was his description of Salah himself.
While recognising Salah as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, Winter suggested the 33-year-old is “not the force of old” anymore — describing him as “more string quartet than heavy metal.”
It is a brutal but poetic line that reflects the reality that even legendary players eventually evolve physically and stylistically as they age.
However, Winter was equally clear that the criticism directed at Arne Slot is justified.
He argued the football currently being played under Slot lacks direction, intensity and authority — exactly the concerns many Liverpool supporters themselves have been voicing for months.
That is why Salah’s comments have resonated so strongly with the fanbase.
Because many fans feel he simply articulated publicly what they already feared privately.
Winter also highlighted how uncomfortable the situation has become for Slot after several Liverpool players publicly “liked” Salah’s post on social media.
Regardless of the reasons behind those interactions, it has only increased scrutiny around the manager and intensified the feeling that tensions exist behind the scenes.
Despite all the drama, Winter believes Slot’s immediate focus must remain clear.
Liverpool still need to secure Champions League football, steady the atmosphere around the club and ensure Salah receives the send-off a Liverpool legend deserves at Anfield this weekend.
Because whatever happens next, Salah’s place in Liverpool history is already secure.
