With reports continuing to suggest that Ibrahima Konaté could leave Liverpool, attention is inevitably turning towards potential replacements.
And one name that keeps appearing is Maxence Lacroix.
The Crystal Palace defender has quietly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most impressive centre-backs and, on paper at least, there is a lot to like.
His profile certainly resembles the type of defender Liverpool would need if Konaté departs.
The numbers immediately stand out:
- 6ft 3in
- Top speed of 32.9 km/h
- 64.4% aerial duel success rate
- 1.6 interceptions per 90 minutes
- Premier League proven
Those are impressive statistics for a defender operating in one of the most demanding leagues in the world.
The biggest challenge Liverpool would face replacing Konaté is replacing his athleticism.
There are not many centre-backs in world football capable of defending huge spaces the way Konaté can.
His recovery pace has often bailed Liverpool out when the team has been exposed defensively.
That is why Lacroix’s speed immediately catches the eye.
At nearly 33 km/h, he possesses the kind of recovery pace modern elite teams desperately need.
Physically, he also looks capable of handling Premier League football.
Standing at 6ft 3in, he offers strength and presence while remaining mobile enough to play in a high defensive line.
That balance is not easy to find.
Many defenders are either dominant physically or quick across the ground.
Very few combine both qualities effectively.
Perhaps most importantly, Liverpool would not be buying potential alone.
Lacroix already knows the Premier League.
He has adapted successfully to the pace and intensity of English football.
That matters enormously.
Liverpool may not have the luxury of signing a defender who requires one or two seasons to settle.
If Konaté leaves, they need somebody capable of contributing immediately.
Of course, there are still questions.
Can Lacroix consistently perform at Champions League level?
Can he organise a defence under pressure?
Can he become a leader inside a dressing room potentially losing several senior figures?
Those questions can only truly be answered over time.
What is clear, however, is that replacing Konaté will not be simple.
Liverpool would be losing one of the fastest, strongest and most important defenders in the squad.
Finding a player capable of replicating those attributes is incredibly difficult.
That is why Lacroix’s name makes sense.
Whether he is the perfect replacement remains open for debate.
But from a physical and tactical perspective, he looks far closer to the solution than many other names currently being linked.
And if Liverpool are serious about rebuilding their defence quickly, Maxence Lacroix may be a player worth watching very closely this summer.
