Liverpool Cannot Afford to Repeat the Same Squad Depth Mistake Under Andoni Iraola

8 Jul

Liverpool’s transfer business this summer has understandably focused on exciting new arrivals and long-term targets.
But there is another issue the club simply cannot ignore.
Squad depth.
If Liverpool are serious about competing on multiple fronts under Andoni Iraola, they cannot begin another season with the same concerns that have lingered over the past two campaigns.

The Warning Signs Were Already There
Last season exposed a familiar problem.
When injuries struck or players needed rest, Liverpool’s options became increasingly limited.
The previous campaign largely avoided major criticism because injuries were kinder and the team did not face the same disruption while integrating several new players.
This time, however, the lack of depth became much harder to ignore.
It placed additional strain on key players and reduced the manager’s flexibility when difficult periods arrived.

Iraola Needs More Than a Strong Starting XI
No manager wants to rely on 13 or 14 players across an entire season.
Iraola’s football is built on intensity.
High pressing.
Constant running.
Aggressive transitions.
That style demands rotation.
Players cannot realistically maintain those physical levels across a full Premier League season, domestic cup competitions and European football without sufficient support.

One More Defender Could Make All the Difference
Nobody is suggesting Liverpool should stockpile players.
But common sense suggests one more experienced, versatile defender would strengthen the squad considerably.
Ideally, that player would be capable of operating on either side of the defence.
Such a signing would provide:
● Greater flexibility.
● Better injury cover.
● Increased competition for places.
● The ability to rotate without weakening the team.
It would also help reduce the workload on Liverpool’s existing defenders, particularly at right-back, where the demands of Iraola’s system are likely to be significant.

A False Economy?
Experienced defenders rarely come cheaply.
However, the cost of failing to strengthen could prove far greater.
One or two injuries in key positions can completely change the trajectory of a season.
Liverpool have experienced that reality often enough in recent years.
Investing in reliable cover should therefore be viewed as sensible planning rather than unnecessary spending.

Avoiding Unnecessary Pressure
Perhaps the biggest concern is what happens if Liverpool choose not to act.
Iraola is only beginning his tenure at Anfield.
He deserves the opportunity to implement his ideas with a squad capable of coping with the demands of a long campaign.
If Liverpool enter the season short of numbers once again, the pressure on the new head coach will increase before he has had a genuine opportunity to establish himself.
That would be unfair on both the manager and the players.

The Smart Move
Liverpool’s recruitment team have earned a reputation for careful planning.
This summer presents another opportunity to show they have learned from previous campaigns.
Adding one experienced, versatile defender may not generate the same excitement as a marquee signing.
But it could prove just as important by the time May arrives.
Sometimes the best transfer is not the one that dominates the headlines.
It is the one that ensures the squad has enough quality, flexibility and resilience to survive the inevitable challenges of a demanding season.
And under Andoni Iraola, Liverpool cannot afford to discover—once again—that they are one player short.
