Andoni Iraola enjoyed the perfect start to life as Liverpool head coach as the Reds came from behind to defeat Sunderland 4-2 in their opening pre-season fixture at GEODIS Park in Nashville.
While the result itself will please supporters, the biggest takeaway was the style of football Liverpool produced—particularly after the interval—as Iraola’s side showed glimpses of the intensity and attacking intent fans have been hoping to see.
Morrison Opens the Scoring
Liverpool made a bright start and deservedly took the lead after 12 minutes.
Harvey Elliott slid a perfectly weighted pass into Kieran Morrison, who calmly stepped inside before guiding a low left-footed effort across goal and into the bottom corner.
It was an excellent finish from the youngster and an encouraging moment for one of Liverpool’s brightest academy prospects.
Early Injury Concern for Gomez
There was, however, an early setback.
Captain Joe Gomez was forced off after just eight minutes with a knock, bringing an untimely end to his evening.
Ifeanyi Ndukwe replaced him, while Kostas Tsimikas inherited the captain’s armband.
Liverpool will now hope Gomez’s injury is only a minor issue with the new season fast approaching.
Sunderland Fight Back
Despite Liverpool’s positive start, Sunderland responded well.
Enzo Le Fee equalised with an impressive long-range strike after driving forward from midfield before beating Giorgi Mamardashvili with a powerful effort.
The Black Cats then took the lead shortly after half-time when Timur Tutierov reacted quickest inside the area to hook home from close range.
At 2-1 down, Liverpool faced their first challenge under Iraola.
Szoboszlai Sparks the Comeback
Liverpool’s response was outstanding.
The equaliser came courtesy of Dominik Szoboszlai, who produced arguably the moment of the match.
After controlling a loose ball on his chest just outside the penalty area, the Hungarian struck a superb half-volley inside the near post.
It was a finish of real quality and exactly the type of moment supporters have come to expect from him.
Chiesa and Koumas Seal the Win
Liverpool’s dominance grew as the second half progressed.
Federico Chiesa put the Reds ahead after collecting an excellent pass from Calvin Ramsay before finishing confidently from a tight angle.
Then, with four minutes remaining, Lewis Koumas wrapped up the victory.
Collecting a pass from Szoboszlai, the young forward cut inside his defender before calmly finding the corner from inside the box.
It was a composed finish and another encouraging contribution from one of Liverpool’s academy graduates.
Positive Signs for Iraola
Although it remains only a pre-season friendly, there were plenty of encouraging signs.
Liverpool looked increasingly aggressive after the break.
The pressing became more coordinated.
The movement improved.
And once the substitutions settled, the Reds largely controlled the contest.
Young players such as Morrison, Koumas and Ndukwe all took their opportunities, while Szoboszlai and Chiesa demonstrated the quality expected of senior players.
A Promising Start
No major conclusions should be drawn from one pre-season game.
Fitness remains the priority, and several senior players are still to return.
However, Liverpool supporters will leave this match feeling optimistic.
Four goals.
Several impressive individual performances.
A positive response after falling behind.
And, most importantly, Andoni Iraola begins his Liverpool journey with a victory.
It may only be the first step, but it was certainly an encouraging one.
