Fresh transfer speculation surrounding Cody Gakpo has emerged after comments from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking about Tottenham’s transfer plans, Romano said:
“Keep an eye on Tottenham and Cody Gakpo in the next weeks. They really like the player.”
While that does not necessarily mean a transfer is imminent, it is the strongest indication yet that Spurs are monitoring Liverpool’s Dutch forward.
Tottenham Admire Gakpo
It is no surprise that Tottenham would be interested.
At his best, Gakpo is a versatile attacker capable of playing:
- Left wing
- Centre-forward
- Attacking midfield
He combines technical quality with intelligent movement and has the experience of playing at the highest level for both Liverpool and the Netherlands.
For a club looking to strengthen its attacking options, he would naturally be an attractive target.
Would Liverpool Even Consider Selling?
That is the bigger question.
Liverpool are entering an important season under Andoni Iraola, and Gakpo is expected to be part of a highly competitive forward line.
While his time at Anfield has been mixed, he remains a player with significant quality and experience.
The club are also still searching for another winger, which would make selling one of their established attackers a major decision.
Unless Liverpool receive a very strong offer, it is difficult to see the Reds actively looking to move him on.
A Chance to Impress Iraola
Pre-season has given every player a clean slate.
For Gakpo, this campaign could be an opportunity to establish himself as a key figure under Iraola.
The Spaniard’s high-energy, direct style may suit Gakpo better than previous systems, particularly if he is given greater freedom to attack defenders and operate across the front line.
A strong start to the season could quickly end any transfer speculation.
Tottenham’s Interest Doesn’t Mean a Deal
It is important to keep Romano’s comments in context.
Saying that Tottenham “really like the player” is very different from saying negotiations have started or that Liverpool are prepared to sell.
Clubs admire players all the time without making formal approaches.
At this stage, there is no indication that a transfer is close.
One to Monitor
With several weeks still remaining in the transfer window, situations can change quickly.
If Tottenham decide to formalise their interest, Liverpool may have a decision to make.
For now, though, Cody Gakpo remains a Liverpool player, and many supporters will be hoping he can show exactly why the club signed him in the first place.
