Liverpool Ask PSG Not to Play Bradley Barcola Against Rennes as Talks Continue

22 Aug

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola appears to be becoming increasingly intense.

According to sources in France, Liverpool have reportedly made a firm request to Paris Saint-Germain regarding the winger ahead of their opening clash against Rennes.

The claim is that Liverpool want Barcola to remain out of the starting XI, or at most be used as an emergency substitute, while negotiations between the two clubs continue.

If accurate, it would represent a fascinating development in the transfer saga.

Liverpool don’t want anything to complicate the deal

From Liverpool’s perspective, it is understandable why they would prefer Barcola not to feature.

The Reds have reportedly been working on a deal for the French winger for much of the summer, and they clearly don’t want to see him play a competitive match while his future remains unresolved.

There’s also the obvious concern of injury.

If Liverpool are negotiating a huge transfer for Barcola, the last thing they would want is for him to suffer an injury before the deal is completed.

But there could be another reason.

Liverpool may want PSG to make a decision.

Will PSG listen?

That’s the big question.

PSG don’t have to follow Liverpool’s request.

Barcola remains their player and, unless there is an agreement between the clubs, they are entitled to select him.

Luis Enrique will ultimately decide his squad.

However, the situation becomes much more complicated if PSG already know that Barcola wants to move to Liverpool.

Why risk starting a player whose future is being negotiated?

Especially when reports have suggested that Barcola has already been left out of recent squads.

The negotiations remain the key

Liverpool’s position appears to be clear.

They want Barcola.

But they don’t want to simply pay whatever PSG demand.

Recent reports have suggested PSG are now prepared to lower their initial asking price, with Liverpool attempting to negotiate an even better deal.

That could mean the two clubs are getting closer.

But until there is an agreement, nothing is guaranteed.

Barcola could be the missing piece

It’s easy to understand why Liverpool are pushing so hard.

Liverpool need more pace and directness in attack.

Alexander Isak needs service.

Florian Wirtz needs runners around him.

And Andoni Iraola’s system requires attacking players capable of stretching opposition defences.

Barcola ticks almost every box.

His acceleration and ability to beat defenders would give Liverpool something they don’t currently have in abundance.

But Liverpool can’t control PSG

This is where things get interesting.

Liverpool can make their request.

PSG can listen.

But ultimately, Luis Enrique decides whether Barcola plays.

And if PSG believe they can still keep the winger, they may have no problem selecting him against Rennes.

Liverpool therefore have to be careful not to push too hard.

The last thing they want is for negotiations to become hostile.

This saga is getting serious

Barcola potentially being left out of PSG’s opening game would be another major indication that his future is uncertain.

If he is named on the bench, Liverpool supporters will immediately be watching to see whether he actually gets onto the pitch.

And if he’s nowhere near the squad?

That would certainly fuel speculation that a transfer could be getting closer.

But will PSG listen to Liverpool’s request?

That’s the question.

Liverpool have reportedly asked PSG to keep Barcola out, or at least use him only in an emergency.

Now we wait to see whether Paris Saint-Germain agree.

Because every minute Barcola spends on the pitch is another minute Liverpool will be nervously watching.

The negotiations continue.

And Liverpool clearly don’t want anything to get in the way of the deal.

Barcola and Mbaye Set to Be Left Out Again as Liverpool Watch Closely

22 Aug

There could be another interesting development in Liverpool’s pursuit of PSG’s attacking duo.

Reports from France suggest Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye will once again be left out of the PSG squad, as both players continue to see their futures surrounded by uncertainty.

For Liverpool supporters, that is certainly something worth keeping an eye on.

Both Barcola and Mbaye have been strongly linked with moves to Anfield, with Liverpool reportedly interested in signing the pair.

Another weekend on the sidelines

The fact that Barcola and Mbaye could once again be omitted from the squad is significant.

These are two highly-rated attacking players who would normally be expected to be competing for places in PSG’s team.

Instead, their futures appear to be taking centre stage.

If PSG continue to leave them out while negotiations take place, it suggests the club may not want either player involved while there is uncertainty over potential transfers.

And Liverpool will undoubtedly be watching the situation closely.

Barcola remains the big target

Liverpool’s interest in Barcola has been one of the major stories of the transfer window.

The French winger has been viewed as one of the club’s preferred attacking targets, with his pace, directness and ability to beat defenders making him an obvious fit for what Liverpool need.

Most importantly, reports have indicated that Barcola’s priority is Liverpool.

That could become increasingly important if PSG eventually decide they are willing to negotiate.

Mbaye is a different situation

Liverpool are also interested in Ibrahim Mbaye, but the financial side of that deal appears much more complicated.

PSG reportedly want around €70m-€80m for the 18-year-old, while Liverpool value him closer to €50m and aren’t currently prepared to go as high as €60m.

So there remains a significant difference in valuation.

Liverpool have already reportedly agreed personal terms with Mbaye, meaning the biggest obstacle is now the fee PSG are demanding.

Why leaving them out matters

If Barcola and Mbaye are both left out again, it raises an obvious question:

How long can PSG continue this situation?

The longer they remain unavailable, the more pressure there could be on PSG to resolve their futures.

Liverpool don’t need to panic.

In fact, they should continue doing exactly what they appear to be doing — waiting for PSG to become more realistic with their demands.

Liverpool need attacking reinforcements

From Liverpool’s perspective, this situation is particularly interesting because Andoni Iraola needs more attacking options.

Alexander Isak needs service.

Florian Wirtz needs runners around him.

Liverpool need pace and directness from the wide areas.

Barcola would certainly provide that.

And Mbaye represents another hugely exciting long-term option.

But Liverpool have to make sure they don’t overpay.

Another weekend, another reminder

Barcola and Mbaye being left out again doesn’t necessarily mean either player is about to join Liverpool.

But it certainly keeps the situation alive.

Both players remain on the sidelines.

Liverpool remain interested.

And PSG still have decisions to make.

Could another weekend without Barcola and Mbaye finally push PSG towards a compromise?

Liverpool supporters will certainly be hoping so.

Liverpool Have Another Option if Yankuba Minteh Deal Becomes Too Expensive

22 Aug

Liverpool’s pursuit of Yankuba Minteh could be heading towards a crucial decision.

The Reds have already seen two offers rejected by Brighton, with the latest bid reportedly worth around £60m. Brighton are understood to value the 22-year-old closer to £70m. (The Times)

And now David Ornstein has provided another interesting update.

Speaking about the situation, Ornstein said that if the numbers aren’t right for Liverpool, the club have another option they are weighing up and could pivot towards.

However, he also stressed that he isn’t ruling Minteh out.

That could be a very important development.

Liverpool won’t simply pay whatever Brighton demand

The biggest issue appears to be the valuation.

Liverpool clearly like Minteh.

They have already made two bids, which tells us this isn’t simply a player they have been monitoring.

But there is a limit to what they’re prepared to pay.

And I actually think that’s sensible.

Minteh is an exciting 22-year-old winger with Premier League experience, but Liverpool don’t need to get themselves into a situation where they massively overpay simply because they need another wide player.

Brighton know Liverpool are desperate for attacking reinforcements.

Liverpool know Brighton know that.

That’s how transfer negotiations work.

So who is the alternative?

This is the really interesting part.

Ornstein hasn’t revealed the identity of the alternative, meaning Liverpool could be keeping their next move very close to their chest.

The Reds have been linked with a number of attacking players throughout the summer, including Ibrahim Mbaye, Bradley Barcola and other wide options.

Liverpool have already signed Victor Muñoz, but Andoni Iraola has made it clear that he wants more options in the wide areas.

So it wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool have another name ready to go.

This could actually help Liverpool

Having an alternative gives Liverpool more negotiating power.

If Brighton know Liverpool have nowhere else to turn, they can simply keep demanding £70m or more.

But if Liverpool can genuinely say:

“If the price doesn’t work, we’ll move on.”

then Brighton have a decision to make too.

Do they stick to their valuation and risk keeping an unhappy player?

Or do they compromise and find a deal with Liverpool?

That’s why having another target is so important.

Liverpool still need pace

There is no doubt in my mind that Liverpool need another explosive winger.

Alexander Isak needs service.

Florian Wirtz needs runners around him.

Liverpool need players capable of stretching defences and attacking space.

Minteh certainly fits that profile.

But if Liverpool believe another player can provide similar qualities for a more sensible fee, they shouldn’t be afraid to walk away.

This is where Richard Hughes has to get it right

Liverpool have already spent heavily this summer.

They’ve shown that they’re willing to pay huge fees for players they believe can make a major difference.

But that doesn’t mean every player should come with an enormous price tag.

The best transfer windows aren’t simply about signing your first-choice players.

They’re about having alternatives when negotiations don’t go your way.

And Ornstein’s comments suggest Liverpool have exactly that.

Minteh isn’t dead — but Liverpool have a limit.

That’s probably the most important message to take from this latest update.

Liverpool clearly want him.

They’ve made multiple offers.

But if Brighton refuse to budge and the numbers stop making sense, the Reds appear prepared to move on.

And honestly, I like that approach.

Get Minteh if the deal is right.

Walk away if Brighton demand too much.

Because Liverpool need another winger.

But they don’t need to pay absolutely anything to get one.

And somewhere inside Liverpool’s recruitment plans, another option is waiting.

Liverpool U21s Draw 1-1 With Everton in Feisty Mini-Derby at Goodison Park

22 Aug

Liverpool U21s were involved in a proper derby battle at Goodison Park on Friday night as they drew 1-1 with Everton U21s in a feisty Premier League 2 encounter.

There was plenty of drama, two red cards, some heavy challenges, a returning Jayden Danns and, remarkably, centre-back Mor Talla Ndiaye ending the match in goal.

It was certainly not your typical academy fixture.

Wright puts Liverpool ahead

Liverpool started with a slightly weakened side, with the likes of Luke Chambers and James McConnell left out as the club continue to manage their young players amid potential loan moves.

Will Wright and Keyrol Figueroa started together in an unusual front two, and it was Wright who opened the scoring after just 14 minutes.

The forward redirected a low cross beyond Everton goalkeeper George Pickford to give Liverpool the lead.

But Everton responded almost immediately.

Just four minutes later, Jack Patterson converted a dangerous cross to level the game.

Everton U21s 1-1 Liverpool U21s.

It was a proper derby

The match quickly developed into a physical contest.

There were several late challenges throughout the opening half, with Wellity Lucky particularly unfortunate to find himself on the receiving end of some heavy tackles.

At one point, Lucky was left in pain after another challenge and punched the ground in frustration.

Thankfully, he was able to continue.

The referee eventually managed to get more control of the game, but the intensity never really disappeared.

And that’s perhaps exactly what Liverpool’s youngsters needed.

These are the experiences that help prepare young players for senior football.

Danns makes his return

One of the biggest positives for Liverpool was seeing Jayden Danns return to competitive action.

The 20-year-old striker has been building his fitness after impressing during training but hadn’t featured in Liverpool’s pre-season friendlies.

Rob Page introduced him in the second half for Figueroa.

And Danns almost made an instant impact.

Within 10 minutes he went close to scoring, with his effort rebounding to Ollie O’Connor.

O’Connor had an even better opportunity but dragged his effort narrowly wide.

It wasn’t Danns’ night in front of goal, but simply getting competitive minutes under his belt will be a major positive.

Then everything went crazy

Liverpool looked comfortable for long periods of the second half, but the game completely changed late on.

Everton thought they had taken the lead when Rocco Lambert finished brilliantly into the top corner.

However, the referee had already stopped play for a foul, meaning the goal didn’t count.

Then came the moment nobody expected.

Everton broke forward and Harvey Davies came off his line to clear.

The Everton attacker reached the ball first and Davies was forced into a foul.

Red card.

Liverpool had already used all of their substitutes.

So who was going in goal?

Mor Talla Ndiaye.

A centre-back becomes goalkeeper

With no goalkeeper available, Ndiaye pulled on the gloves and took up his new temporary position.

And incredibly, he even managed to make a save.

For a few minutes, Liverpool had a centre-back protecting their goal in a Merseyside derby.

You couldn’t make it up.

But the drama wasn’t finished.

Everton’s Graham was also sent off after a late fracas, while Upton was shown a yellow card as tempers boiled over.

Eventually, the final whistle arrived.

Everton U21s 1-1 Liverpool U21s.

Lucky impresses

Wellity Lucky was named The Kopite View’s Man of the Match after another committed performance at centre-back.

Despite taking some heavy challenges, he continued to compete and showed plenty of determination.

For academy players, these derby experiences can be hugely valuable.

They aren’t simply about technical ability.

They’re about handling pressure, physicality and emotion.

And this was certainly a test of all three.

A point and plenty of positives

Liverpool won’t be particularly thrilled with the result, but there were plenty of positives.

Wright got on the scoresheet.

Danns returned to action.

Lucky impressed despite taking some punishment.

And Ndiaye can now officially add emergency goalkeeper to his CV.

Most importantly, the youngsters experienced what a proper competitive derby feels like.

It was chaotic.

It was physical.

It was entertaining.

And perhaps most importantly, it was a reminder that Liverpool’s academy continues to produce players who aren’t afraid of a fight.

Everton 1-1 Liverpool.

Two red cards.

A goalkeeper sent off.

A centre-back in goal.

And a derby that had absolutely everything.

PSG Demand €70m for Ibrahim Mbaye as Liverpool Refuse to Pay Over the Odds

22 Aug

Liverpool’s pursuit of Ibrahim Mbaye has hit a major stumbling block.

According to Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport, PSG are demanding €70m for the 18-year-old Senegalese attacker this summer.

Even if that figure is only an opening position for negotiations, it is already putting interested clubs off, with Mbaye reportedly valued at closer to €50m by potential suitors. (Foot Africa)

And Liverpool don’t want to go as high as PSG’s current asking price.

Liverpool have already agreed personal terms

This is what makes the situation particularly frustrating for Liverpool.

The Reds have reportedly already reached an agreement with Mbaye over the terms of a potential five-year contract.

So from Liverpool’s perspective, the player appears to be keen on the move.

The problem isn’t Mbaye.

It’s PSG.

The two clubs now have to find a valuation that works for everyone.

£70m is a huge price

There’s no doubt Mbaye is a hugely exciting prospect.

But €70m is a massive amount of money for an 18-year-old who has only made a limited number of senior appearances.

Mbaye made 24 Ligue 1 appearances last season, but only 10 were starts.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t worth serious money.

It simply means Liverpool have to consider the risk involved.

There is a huge difference between paying €50m for potential and committing €70m.

Liverpool value him closer to €50m

That reported difference in valuation is the heart of the negotiations.

PSG: €70m.

Interested clubs: around €50m.

That’s potentially a €20m gap before negotiations have even really got going.

And Liverpool have already shown this summer that they aren’t prepared to simply pay whatever another club demands.

We’ve seen it with Bradley Barcola.

We’ve seen it with Yankuba Minteh.

And now we’re seeing the same thing with Mbaye.

Liverpool clearly believe there is a price they are willing to pay — and a price they aren’t.

Why PSG are asking so much

You can understand PSG’s position to a degree.

Mbaye is only 18 and is regarded as one of the most exciting young attackers in European football.

PSG don’t need to sell him.

And when Premier League clubs come calling, they know there is enormous spending power available.

That’s why they’re able to put a €70m valuation on him.

But PSG’s own squad situation could eventually work in Liverpool’s favour.

The club have added attacking players this summer, including Mika Godts and Ferran Torres, while both Mbaye and Barcola are reportedly set to remain out of PSG matchday involvement while their futures are resolved. (FourFourTwo)

Liverpool shouldn’t panic

This is where I think Liverpool have to remain disciplined.

Yes, they need attacking reinforcements.

Yes, Mbaye is an exciting talent.

Yes, personal terms are reportedly already agreed.

But that doesn’t mean Liverpool should suddenly throw €70m at PSG.

If they believe Mbaye is worth around €50m, they should stick to their valuation.

Perhaps they can negotiate a deal worth €50m guaranteed with significant add-ons.

That could give PSG the opportunity to reach their desired figure while protecting Liverpool from paying the full amount immediately.

And what about Barcola?

The Mbaye situation is also closely connected to Bradley Barcola.

Liverpool want both players, according to the reports surrounding the transfer saga, but the financial demands involved make a double deal extremely difficult.

Interestingly, both players are currently in a similar position at PSG.

Neither is expected to feature while their respective futures remain unresolved.

That could potentially increase the pressure on PSG to find solutions.

Liverpool have a decision to make

I really like Mbaye.

At 18, his potential is enormous, and Liverpool clearly see something special in him.

But €70m is too much if Liverpool genuinely value him closer to €50m.

The Reds have already demonstrated that they are willing to spend huge sums when they believe a player is worth it.

They shouldn’t abandon that discipline simply because the transfer window is closing.

The player wants Liverpool.

Liverpool want the player.

PSG want €70m.

Now the clubs have to find the middle ground.

And if PSG refuse to lower their demands, Liverpool may have to walk away — even if that means missing out on one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers.

This transfer is far from dead.

But Liverpool have made their position clear:

They won’t overpay.

Tottenham Still Pushing for Cody Gakpo as Liverpool Face a Big Decision

22 Aug

The Cody Gakpo situation at Liverpool is becoming increasingly interesting.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham remain absolutely on it for Gakpo, with Spurs continuing to push for a deal.

Romano has also suggested that Gakpo’s Liverpool future could be decided in the coming days if the two clubs can reach an agreement. Recent reporting has indicated that personal terms aren’t the main obstacle — the crucial issue is whether Liverpool are prepared to sanction the transfer and agree a financial package with Tottenham. (Telegram)

And that leaves Liverpool with a huge decision to make.

Liverpool don’t want to lose Gakpo

This is the important part.

Liverpool aren’t actively trying to get rid of Cody Gakpo.

He’s had a strong pre-season under Andoni Iraola and has shown that he can be an extremely useful player in this new system.

He’s also one of the few experienced attacking options Liverpool currently have.

So why would they sell him?

The answer is simple:

Money and squad balance.

If Tottenham make an offer Liverpool believe is too good to refuse, the club could potentially use that money to strengthen elsewhere.

Barcola could hold the key

The most interesting part of this whole situation is Bradley Barcola.

Liverpool are still pushing to sign the PSG winger, while Tottenham’s pursuit of Gakpo could depend partly on what happens with Liverpool’s own attacking recruitment.

If Liverpool manage to bring Barcola to Anfield, suddenly the club have another elite attacking option.

That could make Gakpo’s departure easier to accept.

But if Barcola doesn’t arrive?

I’d be extremely reluctant to let Gakpo leave.

Liverpool would potentially be weakening an already stretched attack.

What is Gakpo worth?

This is where Liverpool need to be very careful.

Tottenham have already been spending heavily on attacking reinforcements, and they clearly believe Gakpo is another player who can improve their squad.

Liverpool shouldn’t sell him cheaply.

He’s a proven Premier League player, a Netherlands international and someone who can play multiple positions.

If Spurs want him badly enough, they need to pay a premium.

Recent reports have suggested Liverpool’s valuation could be upwards of £60m, with the Reds not actively looking to sell unless a significant offer arrives.

Iraola has a decision too

There’s also the manager’s perspective.

Iraola reportedly likes what he’s seen from Gakpo during pre-season.

And I can understand why.

Gakpo gives him tactical flexibility.

He can play wide.

He can move centrally.

He can operate as a striker if needed.

And with Liverpool already dealing with injuries and a lack of depth in certain attacking positions, having a player like Gakpo could prove invaluable.

But what if the offer is huge?

This is where I would at least listen.

If Tottenham come in with a £70m-£80m+ package, Liverpool would have a serious decision to make.

Not because Gakpo isn’t good enough.

But because that kind of money could potentially fund another major attacking addition.

However, Liverpool would have to make sure the replacement is actually secured first.

There would be no point selling Gakpo and then discovering they can’t land Barcola or another winger.

That would leave Iraola with fewer options rather than more.

The next few days could decide Gakpo’s future

Tottenham are still pushing.

Liverpool are considering their position.

And Gakpo’s future could now depend on whether the clubs can agree a financial package.

For me, the answer is simple:

If Barcola arrives and Tottenham pay a huge fee, consider it.

If Barcola doesn’t arrive, keep Gakpo.

Liverpool are trying to compete across four competitions.

They need quality and depth.

And Cody Gakpo gives Iraola both.

Tottenham may be absolutely determined to sign him.

But Liverpool shouldn’t make it easy for them.

Kenny Dalglish’s Five Greatest Players He Ever Saw Is Some List

22 Aug

I watched a video featuring Kenny Dalglish talking about the five greatest players he had ever seen, and his choices immediately caught my attention.

Because when someone like King Kenny gives you a list like this, you listen.

Dalglish played alongside some of the greatest footballers in British football history, managed world-class players and competed at the highest level for decades.

And his five were:

1. Jimmy Johnstone
2. Graeme Souness
3. Ian Rush
4. Steven Gerrard
5. Denis Law

And honestly, what a list.

Jimmy Johnstone

Putting Jimmy Johnstone at No.1 is fascinating.

Known as “Jinky”, Johnstone was one of the most naturally gifted dribblers Scotland has ever produced.

He was a key member of Celtic’s famous Lisbon Lions team that won the European Cup in 1967, and he finished third in the Ballon d’Or voting that same year. (FourFourTwo)

For Dalglish, who grew up watching Scottish football before becoming a superstar himself, seeing Johnstone at his peak must have been something special.

And perhaps that’s why he tops the list.

Graeme Souness

This one won’t surprise Liverpool supporters.

Souness was an absolute monster in midfield.

He had the physicality, but he also had tremendous technical ability and footballing intelligence.

At Liverpool he won five league titles and three European Cups, becoming one of the defining players of the club’s greatest era. (FourFourTwo)

Dalglish didn’t just watch Souness.

He played alongside him.

So when Kenny puts Souness second, that’s a pretty incredible endorsement.

Ian Rush

Of course Ian Rush makes the list.

Rush was one of the greatest goalscorers Liverpool have ever had and remains the club’s all-time leading scorer.

His finishing, movement and ability to appear in exactly the right place made him one of the most feared strikers of his generation.

Dalglish and Rush formed one of Liverpool’s most iconic partnerships.

And what makes this selection even more interesting is that Kenny isn’t simply saying Rush was one of Liverpool’s greatest.

He’s saying Rush was one of the five greatest players he ever saw.

That’s some compliment.

4️⃣ Steven Gerrard

This is the selection that will probably create the most debate.

Gerrard didn’t play in the same era as Johnstone, Souness and Rush, so Dalglish’s judgement here comes from watching him throughout his career rather than playing alongside him.

But it’s impossible to argue against Gerrard’s ability.

He was capable of doing almost everything.

Passing.

Tackling.

Scoring.

Creating.

Leading.

And producing extraordinary moments when Liverpool needed him most.

His performance in the 2005 Champions League final and his two-goal FA Cup final display against West Ham the following year are just two examples of the impact he could have. (FourFourTwo)

For a player to make Kenny Dalglish’s personal top five is some achievement.

5️⃣ Denis Law

And finally, another Scottish icon.

Denis Law.

The “Lawman” was one of the greatest goalscorers of his generation and won the Ballon d’Or in 1964.

He scored 30 goals in 55 appearances for Scotland and won the European Cup, two league titles and the FA Cup with Manchester United.

Again, Dalglish would have seen Law playing at the highest level while growing up in Scotland.

So there is a real sense of history running through this list.

But what about Kenny himself?

This is the obvious question.

Where is Kenny Dalglish?

The man who won five league titles and three European Cups as a Liverpool player is arguably one of the greatest British footballers ever himself.

FourFourTwo ranks Dalglish as the second-greatest British footballer ever, behind only George Best.

But that’s perhaps what makes the list even more interesting.

Kenny isn’t putting himself into the conversation.

He’s looking at the players he watched and deciding who impressed him the most.

And I think that’s what makes his choices so fascinating.

What a football education

Just look at the names again:

Jimmy Johnstone.

Graeme Souness.

Ian Rush.

Steven Gerrard.

Denis Law.

Five incredible footballers from five different eras.

And three of them have an enormous connection to Liverpool.

The fact that Souness, Rush and Gerrard all make Dalglish’s personal top five tells you just how much extraordinary talent has passed through Anfield.

But I’m still stuck on Jimmy Johnstone at No.1.

If Kenny Dalglish says Jinky was the greatest player he ever saw, that’s good enough for me.

Curtis Jones Completes £30m Move to Inter Milan — Liverpool’s Midfield Is Now Looking Thin

21 Aug

Curtis Jones has officially completed his move from Liverpool to Inter Milan, bringing an end to a 16-year association with his boyhood club.

The 25-year-old has joined Inter in a deal worth £30m, with Liverpool also reportedly retaining a 10 per cent sell-on clause. Jones made 228 appearances for Liverpool after joining the academy at the age of nine.

It’s a sad moment to see a Scouser leave Anfield.

But from a footballing perspective, I think Liverpool have created a major problem for themselves.

Liverpool’s midfield suddenly looks very thin

The obvious concern is what happens when Liverpool need to rotate.

The established central midfield options are now essentially:

● Alexis Mac Allister

● Ryan Gravenberch

● Dominik Szoboszlai

Then you have Trey Nyoni, who is still only 19 and has very limited Premier League experience.

Wataru Endo can provide cover, but he isn’t the same type of player as Jones and is also 33.

That’s not an enormous amount of depth for a club expecting to compete across multiple competitions.

And that’s before injuries and suspensions inevitably arrive.

Jones wasn’t just another squad player

It’s easy to look at Jones’ starting statistics and conclude that Liverpool can cope without him.

But that’s not really the point.

Jones made 49 appearances in all competitions last season, even though he wasn’t always a starter.

He provided another technically gifted option who understood the Premier League, had Champions League experience and knew exactly what was expected at Liverpool.

Replacing that experience isn’t straightforward.

The Nyoni opportunity

There is a positive.

Jones’ departure could open the door for Trey Nyoni.

Liverpool clearly rate the youngster highly, and his development has reportedly contributed to the club’s belief that a direct replacement for Jones may not be necessary.

And honestly, I’d love to see Nyoni get opportunities.

But there’s a big difference between giving Nyoni opportunities and expecting him to carry the midfield through a season.

He shouldn’t have that pressure placed on him.

Liverpool need experience too

This is the part that concerns me most.

Liverpool aren’t simply competing in the Premier League.

They want to challenge on four fronts.

Premier League.

Champions League.

FA Cup.

League Cup.

That means there will be periods where Liverpool play twice a week for months at a time.

You need depth.

You need players who can come into the team without dramatically changing the level of performance.

And you need experienced players who can handle the pressure when the games really matter.

Jones provided some of that.

Now he’s gone.

And Iraola’s football makes this even more important

Iraola wants Liverpool to press aggressively and defend collectively.

That requires enormous physical output from his midfielders.

It’s one thing to do it for 20 games.

It’s another to do it for an entire season while playing Champions League football.

If Mac Allister, Gravenberch or Szoboszlai pick up an injury, Liverpool suddenly have a very different problem.

And if two of them are unavailable at the same time?

The depth becomes extremely concerning.

£30m doesn’t solve the sporting problem

Liverpool have received a decent fee for a player entering the final year of his contract.

From a financial perspective, you can understand the decision.

Losing Jones for free next summer would have been a risk, particularly if he had no intention of signing a new contract.

But the money only matters if Liverpool use it wisely.

Selling a midfielder for £30m and then deciding not to strengthen the position could leave Liverpool weaker.

That’s the issue.

Liverpool still have time to act

The transfer window isn’t closed yet.

And there have already been reports linking Liverpool with midfielders including Adam Wharton, Angelo Stiller and Tyler Adams.

Whether any of those deals happen remains to be seen.

But personally, I think Liverpool should be looking.

Not necessarily for another Fabinho.

Not necessarily for a specialist No.6.

Just another experienced midfielder capable of contributing immediately.

Liverpool have made their decision on Curtis Jones.

Now they need to make the next one.

Was selling him for £30m the right decision?

Financially, I can understand it.

Sportingly, I’m much less convinced.

Because Liverpool have just lost a 25-year-old midfielder with 228 appearances for the club, Premier League experience and Champions League experience.

And they’ve replaced him — at least for now — with a much thinner midfield group.

Trey Nyoni could be the surprise beneficiary.

Maybe he takes his opportunity and becomes a star.

I hope he does.

But Liverpool shouldn’t gamble an entire season on it.

Jones has gone to Inter.

Now Liverpool need another midfielder.

Jamie (The Kopite View)

Why Liverpool Need Speedy Wingers

21 Aug

Liverpool have spent an enormous amount of money on Alexander Isak.

Now they need to give him the tools to succeed.

For me, one of the biggest priorities for Liverpool before the transfer window closes should be adding genuine pace and directness to the wide areas.

Because having a world-class No.9 is only part of the equation.

You have to get him the ball.

Isak needs runners around him

Alexander Isak is at his best when defenders are being stretched.

His movement is intelligent.

He can drop into space.

He can run behind.

He can drift into channels.

And when he gets isolated against a defender, he has the ability to create something himself.

But if Liverpool’s wingers aren’t providing enough pace and width, opponents can simply keep the pitch compact.

That makes Isak’s job much harder.

Liverpool need players who can make defenders turn and run towards their own goal.

This is why pace matters

Imagine Isak playing through the middle with two explosive wingers either side of him.

If the opposition full-backs push forward, Liverpool can immediately look for the space behind them.

If they stay deep, Liverpool’s wingers can receive the ball and attack them one-on-one.

If the centre-backs move towards Isak, the wingers can exploit the gaps.

Suddenly, defenders have difficult decisions to make.

That’s what you want.

You want the opposition defence constantly asking questions.

👀 Isak shouldn’t have to do everything himself

One of the biggest dangers is expecting Isak to be the solution to every attacking problem.

Liverpool have invested heavily in him because he’s capable of scoring goals.

But he needs chances.

And chances don’t simply appear.

They are created by movement, passing, width, crosses, cut-backs and players running beyond defenders.

The Times has highlighted just how important Isak is to Liverpool’s new project, particularly with Mohamed Salah’s departure and Hugo Ekitike’s injury leaving greater responsibility on the Swedish striker.

That makes the players around him even more important.

We need wingers who scare defenders

This is why I understand Liverpool’s interest in players such as Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh.

They offer something Liverpool desperately need:

Explosiveness.

Barcola can accelerate past defenders.

Minteh can carry the ball at frightening speed.

Those players don’t simply provide goals and assists.

They change the way an opposition defence has to set up.

And that could ultimately create more opportunities for Isak.

Wirtz and Isak need space

There’s another reason I’m excited about this.

Florian Wirtz and Isak.

We’ve already seen glimpses of what their partnership could become.

Wirtz wants to receive the ball between the lines.

Isak wants to find space in front of and behind the defence.

But imagine adding a winger who is capable of sprinting beyond his full-back at the same time.

The opposition suddenly has three problems to deal with.

They can’t simply concentrate on stopping Wirtz finding Isak.

Liverpool’s attack needs balance

Liverpool don’t necessarily need three players who are constantly trying to beat defenders.

But they absolutely need threats in behind.

That’s what makes a striker like Isak even more dangerous.

If defenders know Liverpool’s wingers can run beyond them, they can’t simply squeeze the pitch.

That creates the little pockets of space where Isak can thrive.

And if they drop deeper to protect the space behind them?

Liverpool’s midfielders and Wirtz get more room.

That’s the beauty of having genuine pace.

It creates space even when the fast player doesn’t touch the ball.

This is why I think Liverpool need another winger

The new season is going to put enormous pressure on Isak.

He has arrived with a huge price tag and has already been labelled Liverpool’s potential X-factor.

But Liverpool shouldn’t simply expect him to produce magic from nothing.

They need to build an attack around his strengths.

And that means giving him service.

Give him runners.

Give him width.

Give him crosses.

Give him through balls.

Give him wingers who can stretch defences.

Liverpool have their No.9.

Now they need to give him ammunition.

Because if Liverpool can surround Alexander Isak with enough pace and creativity, I genuinely believe we could see a completely different striker this season.

Isak can score the goals.

Wirtz can create the chances.

But Liverpool need those explosive wingers to make the whole attack click.

And if they get that right, this Liverpool attack could be frightening.

Liverpool Have £60m Yankuba Minteh Bid Rejected as Brighton Demand £75m

21 Aug

Liverpool’s pursuit of Yankuba Minteh has taken another dramatic turn.

According to Wilson Cox LFC, Liverpool have had a second bid worth around £60m rejected by Brighton in the last few hours.

The report claims Brighton are holding firm on a valuation of around £75m, with the Seagulls refusing to lower their demands for the 22-year-old winger.

It would mean Liverpool have now seen two bids rejected as they desperately try to strengthen their attacking options before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool aren’t giving up

Liverpool’s initial £50m bid was rejected by Brighton, something that has since been widely reported, including by David Ornstein and The Athletic.

Now, according to Wilson Cox LFC, Liverpool have gone back with an improved offer of around £60m.

And Brighton have said no again.

That tells us something important.

Brighton clearly don’t want to sell Minteh cheaply.

Brighton want £75m

The latest claim is that Brighton are looking for around £75m.

If that’s accurate, Liverpool now have a decision to make.

Do they increase their offer again and move closer to Brighton’s valuation?

Or do they decide that £75m is simply too much for a player who is currently recovering from a serious leg injury?

Minteh is expected to be out for several weeks following surgery, which makes the potential size of the investment even more interesting.

Is £75m too much?

This is where I’m torn.

I really like Minteh as a player.

He’s quick.

He’s powerful.

He’s direct.

He’s capable of attacking defenders and he already has Premier League experience.

At just 22, there is also plenty of room for improvement.

But £75m is serious money.

Liverpool would be paying a huge fee for a player who has scored nine goals and provided eight assists in 66 Premier League appearances.

That’s potential rather than a proven world-class output.

But Liverpool need another attacker

And this is the problem.

Liverpool know they need more options in the wide areas.

Mohamed Salah has gone.

Victor Muñoz has arrived, but Liverpool are still looking for further attacking reinforcements.

Bradley Barcola remains a major target, while Ibrahim Mbaye has also been considered.

Liverpool can’t afford to enter the new season with an attack that is short of options.

That’s why Minteh is so important.

The player reportedly wants Liverpool

Another factor that could help the Reds is Minteh’s reported desire to move to Anfield.

If the player is genuinely pushing for Liverpool, that could potentially make negotiations easier.

But Brighton have a long-term contract with Minteh and therefore have no obligation to sell unless their valuation is met.

That’s why Liverpool’s negotiating team have such a difficult job ahead.

£60m rejected. £75m wanted.

If Wilson Cox LFC’s information is correct, Liverpool have now made their position clear.

£50m wasn’t enough.

£60m apparently isn’t enough.

Brighton want around £75m.

Now the question is whether Liverpool are prepared to bridge that £15m gap.

Personally, I wouldn’t be rushing to £75m.

I’d be trying to structure a deal with a significant amount in add-ons.

Perhaps £60m guaranteed with another £10m-£15m based on appearances, goals, trophies and Champions League success.

That would protect Liverpool while giving Brighton the opportunity to receive the valuation they want.

Liverpool have a decision to make

The fact they’re reportedly returning with a second bid tells us they clearly like Minteh.

This isn’t a player Liverpool are simply monitoring.

They’re trying to sign him.

But Brighton are making them pay.

And with the clock ticking towards the end of the transfer window, this could become one of the biggest transfer battles of the summer.

Liverpool want Yankuba Minteh.

Minteh reportedly wants Liverpool.

Brighton want £75m.

Now we find out just how badly Liverpool want him.
