Hughes Linked With Al-Hilal as Liverpool Face Growing Off-Field Uncertainty

30 Apr

Fresh reports have once again linked Richard Hughes with a move away from Liverpool FC, with claims he has agreed to join Al-Hilal SFC as sporting director.

New claims emerge

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), a deal is now in place for Hughes to take up a role in Saudi Arabia, with an announcement potentially imminent.

The update came as part of comments from Al-Hilal head coach Simone Inzaghi, who suggested the two are expected to meet soon — adding weight to the speculation.

Immediate move or delayed exit?

It remains unclear whether Hughes would:

  • Join Al-Hilal immediately
  • Or see out his current deal at Liverpool, which runs until 2027

Some reports even suggest a three-year contract is agreed, with flexibility allowing Hughes to remain UK-based and travel when required.

Liverpool stance vs ongoing speculation

Despite the noise, Liverpool’s position has previously been firm.

Earlier this month, Alex Crook reported that Al-Hilal’s approach had been rebuffed, with Fenway Sports Group keen for Hughes to stay ahead of what is expected to be a crucial transfer window.

However, the rumours have refused to go away.

Wider uncertainty at the club

Any potential departure would come at a sensitive time.

  • Arne Slot’s future as head coach remains under scrutiny
  • CEO of football Michael Edwards is also only contracted until 2027
  • Reports suggest key figures may only be committed to short-term cycles

According to Sam Wallace, both Edwards and Hughes had initially planned to stay for the duration of their three-year agreements — hinting at a possible coordinated transition in the coming years.

Hughes’ own stance

Hughes has largely stayed out of the spotlight during a challenging season, but in a rare interview earlier this year he backed Slot and called for patience:

“Once you’ve got the right person and you believe in that person, the judgment is not something that’s happening on a daily basis.”

He also emphasised the importance of long-term planning and stability:

“This has been a challenging last several months, but I think there’s an element of patience which is required.”

Final thought

Whether Hughes leaves now, later, or not at all, the situation highlights a broader issue at Liverpool — uncertainty at senior level.

With key figures potentially aligned on similar timelines, the coming months could shape not just the squad, but the entire direction of the club.

For now, Liverpool insist Hughes is staying.

But the speculation isn’t going away — and that in itself tells a story.
