There’s a bit of talk going around about Robert Lewandowski potentially being an option for Liverpool FC this summer, with Peter Crouch even saying he’d be a “fantastic option”.
And on the surface, you can see why it’s being mentioned.
With Hugo Ekitike out injured and Alexander Isak needing cover, Liverpool don’t exactly have loads of depth up front. So the idea of bringing in a proven goalscorer for nothing from FC Barcelona is bound to get people talking.
You can’t argue with the record
Even now, Lewandowski is still a proper finisher.
Put the ball in the box and he’ll score goals — simple as that. That’s what he’s done his whole career, and that doesn’t just disappear overnight.
If Liverpool needed someone to come in and take chances, you could argue there aren’t many better.
But does it actually suit us?
This is where I’m not totally sold.
Liverpool’s style, under Arne Slot, is built on energy, pressing, running in behind, constant movement.
Lewandowski isn’t really that player anymore.
He’s not pressing like he used to, he’s not stretching defences with pace — he’s more about being in the right place at the right time.
So you’d almost have to change how you play a bit to fit him in.
Short-term fix or step backwards?
That’s really what this comes down to.
On one hand:
- He could score goals straight away
- He brings experience and know-how
- He wouldn’t need time to settle
But on the other:
- He doesn’t really fit the long-term plan
- He takes minutes away from younger players
- It feels more like a stop-gap than a rebuild signing
And with Richard Hughes in charge of recruitment, you’d expect the focus to stay on the future rather than quick fixes.
My view
Personally, I can see why people are linking it, but I’m not convinced it’s the right move.
It feels like one of those signings that looks great because of the name, but doesn’t quite match what we’re trying to build.
Liverpool should be looking for the next few years, not just the next season.
Final thought
Robert Lewandowski will always guarantee goals.
But the question for Liverpool FC is simple:
Do we want a short-term fix… or something that actually fits where the club is trying to go?
