Alexander Isak reportedly missed training yesterday and is now considered a doubt for tonight’s huge game against Aston Villa.
The news is a major blow to Liverpool’s striking options ahead of such an important night in the race for Champions League qualification.
It’s been a season to forget for Isak since joining Liverpool.
After arriving with massive expectations, the striker has struggled badly with injuries, including recovering from a serious leg break as well as several smaller fitness setbacks throughout the campaign.
Every time it has looked like he was finally building momentum, another issue has seemed to interrupt things again.
That has made it almost impossible for him to find rhythm or consistency this season.
There’s still no question about his quality when fully fit, but Liverpool fans have barely had the chance to see the best version of him over a sustained period.
Now, with another possible absence ahead of a massive match, concerns around Liverpool’s attacking depth are growing again.
Especially considering how important this game is with only two league matches remaining and Champions League qualification still not secured.
Liverpool simply cannot afford to look blunt in attack tonight.
With Arne Slot already under pressure regarding his future, losing another attacking option would be far from ideal.
The return to training of Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Ibrahima Konaté has at least given the squad a lift heading into the game.
Villa Park is never an easy place to go, and Liverpool will need all the quality they can get if they are to leave with a result.
But if Isak is ruled out tonight, it would represent another frustrating setback in what has already been a very difficult first season at Liverpool for the striker.
