Daniel Sturridge Says Liverpool Fans Have Lost Belief

16 May

Former Daniel Sturridge believes many Liverpool fans are no longer watching games with excitement, but simply out of loyalty after such a disappointing season.

Speaking ahead of the clash away to Aston Villa, Sturridge gave an honest assessment of the current mood surrounding the club.

“Liverpool fans used to look forward to nights like Aston Villa away because there was confidence the team would turn up and compete at the highest level.

Now, if we’re being honest, a lot of supporters are watching these games more out of loyalty than excitement because the belief has drained out of the season.”

It’s a comment many Liverpool supporters will probably agree with.

Not long ago, away games against strong sides felt exciting because there was genuine belief Liverpool would rise to the occasion.

Now, too many fans head into matches expecting disappointment.

Sturridge also questioned the lack of urgency being shown from above at the club.

“The biggest frustration is that fans can clearly see the problems, yet it feels like the board are happy to sit still and hope things improve on their own.

At a club like Liverpool, that’s never enough. Supporters don’t just want effort, they want ambition, leadership and signs that the club is serious about getting back to the top.”

That feeling of frustration towards the hierarchy has grown massively in recent months.

Between uncertainty over the manager, contract situations, inconsistent performances and transfer speculation, supporters increasingly feel like the club lacks clear direction heading into a huge summer.

Perhaps Sturridge’s strongest point though was about the atmosphere around the remaining matches.

“And when your fans are already talking more about the summer than the next match, that’s a dangerous place to be.

Villa Park should feel like a massive occasion for Liverpool, but for many supporters tonight it feels more like another game they just need to get through.”

That probably sums up the mood around Liverpool perfectly right now.

The excitement has faded, belief feels damaged and many supporters are simply desperate for clarity, change and signs that the club can recover from what has been a deeply frustrating season.
