Full-time: Aston Villa 4-2 Liverpool as second-half collapse piles pressure on Slot

15 May

Liverpool suffered another damaging defeat as Aston Villa ran out 4-2 winners at Villa Park after Liverpool completely fell apart in the second half.

It is yet another miserable result in what has become a hugely disappointing season for Arne Slot and his side.

After going behind in the first half, Liverpool briefly looked back in the game when Virgil van Dijk equalised.

For a short period, it looked like Liverpool might finally build some momentum.

But once again this team completely crumbled under pressure.

The turning point came after a dreadful mistake from Dominik Szoboszlai.

A slip in midfield gifted possession away and allowed Ollie Watkins to restore Villa’s lead.

From there, Liverpool lost all control of the match.

Watkins added another as Liverpool’s defending completely fell apart again, exposing the same weaknesses supporters have watched all season.

Villa looked sharper, more aggressive and far more organised throughout most of the second half.

Late on, John McGinn capped off a superb Villa performance with a brilliant strike to make it 4-1 and send Villa Park into celebration.

Virgil van Dijk did grab another goal deep into injury time to reduce the score to 4-2, but by then the game was already long gone.

The defeat leaves Liverpool’s Champions League hopes still hanging in the balance heading into the final game of the season.

With only one match remaining at home to Brentford next week, Liverpool still need points to be absolutely certain of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

That alone says everything about how badly this season has unravelled after entering the campaign as defending Premier League champions.

For Liverpool, there are very few positives to take from the night.

Despite welcoming key players back into the squad, the same issues remain — poor defending, mental fragility and a side that looks incapable of handling pressure in big moments.

And the pressure surrounding Slot will now only intensify even further after another collapse away from home.
