Gerrard Suggests Salah’s Message Is a ‘Damning’ Verdict on Liverpool

18 May

Steven Gerrard has delivered a powerful reaction to Mohamed Salah’s emotional social media message about Liverpool — suggesting the forward’s rare public comments point to deeper issues inside the club.

Salah’s post, which called for Liverpool to rediscover their identity and “heavy metal” football, has already sparked huge debate among supporters and pundits alike.

But Gerrard believes the message goes far beyond simple frustration.

Speaking about the situation, Gerrard said:

“Mo Salah doesn’t really speak much, he doesn’t really tweet, and he certainly doesn’t tweet like that. So I think that he’s sending a message to the outside that things in that Liverpool dressing room are not right, the identity’s gone and it’s really hurting him to see it in front of his own eyes.

I’m surprised, the timing, one game to go, his last game for Liverpool. He very rarely speaks, he’s done it lately because he’s bringing the curtain down on an incredible Liverpool career. But that is quite damning to the Liverpool manager and the staff in terms of where this team’s at.”

It is a striking assessment from a Liverpool legend who knows exactly what standards look like at Anfield.

Gerrard’s interpretation suggests Salah’s words are not just emotional reflection, but a signal that something deeper may be wrong within the dressing room.

The timing is what stands out most.

With just one game remaining in the season and what is expected to be Salah’s final appearance for Liverpool FC, his decision to speak so openly has shocked many.

Salah is typically private, measured and focused purely on his football.

That is why his message has carried such weight across the football world.

For Gerrard, it points to frustration over Liverpool’s lost identity — something that has been a recurring theme throughout a difficult campaign under Arne Slot.

The suggestion that standards and intensity have dropped will concern supporters who have grown used to seeing Liverpool compete at the very top in recent years.

The reaction also highlights how much Salah’s voice now carries inside the club.

Even after years of success and countless goals, he remains one of the most influential figures in the modern Liverpool era.

So when he speaks publicly, people listen — including former captains like Gerrard.

With the season coming to a close, attention will now turn to how Liverpool respond on the pitch and whether these concerns about identity and direction can be addressed in the summer.

Because if Gerrard’s interpretation is right, this is about more than one post — it is about the state of the club itself.
