A major new report from sports journalist Chris Joyce has claimed that Liverpool’s hierarchy have decided not to continue with Arne Slot as manager beyond the 2026/27 season.
According to the report, Liverpool’s board had previously been prepared to give Slot more time despite growing criticism throughout a deeply disappointing campaign.
However, it is claimed the situation changed dramatically over the weekend following conversations with senior players inside the dressing room.
The report states:
“The Liverpool board have decided NOT to continue with Arne Slot as manager for the 26/27 season.”
And perhaps most significantly:
“Having previously opted to give Slot more time to turn things around, the decision to sack Slot was made over the weekend following conversations with senior players.”
If accurate, the report would represent a massive development behind the scenes at Liverpool.
Because for weeks the expectation had increasingly been that Champions League qualification would strengthen Slot’s position heading into next season.
Instead, these claims suggest concerns inside the club may run far deeper than results alone.
The timing of the report is particularly striking given the growing public tension surrounding the club in recent days.
Mohamed Salah’s emotional social media comments about Liverpool losing its “heavy metal” identity intensified scrutiny around Slot’s leadership and the atmosphere inside the dressing room.
Questions have also emerged surrounding players such as Alisson Becker and the overall mood behind the scenes following a chaotic campaign.
Supporters have become increasingly frustrated by:
- Passive football
- Defensive collapses
- Poor game management
- Lack of squad rotation
- Recruitment concerns
- Growing signs of dressing room tension
And while many fans initially remained patient with Slot following the impossible task of replacing Jürgen Klopp, the mood around the club has noticeably deteriorated over recent months.
Of course, it remains important to stress that Liverpool have not officially confirmed any such decision publicly.
And with the final game of the season still to come, speculation around the manager’s future is likely to intensify dramatically over the coming days.
But if senior players truly have expressed serious concerns internally, it could explain why Liverpool’s hierarchy may now be reconsidering the long-term direction of the project entirely.
Attention will now inevitably turn towards who Liverpool could potentially target if they do move away from Slot in the future.
Names such as Julian Nagelsmann, Andoni Iraola, Rúben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi have all previously been admired internally.
For now though, uncertainty continues to grow around one of the biggest clubs in world football.
And with emotions already running high ahead of Sunday’s emotional Anfield farewell for Salah and Andrew Robertson, this latest report has only added even more drama to an already explosive situation around Liverpool Football Club.

Amorim and de Zerbi are off the table.
Jaissle, Hoeness, Iraola, Glasner, Inzaghi, Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique have been touted.
I would add Ange Postecoglou to that list based on style of play and motivational prowess. Spurs was an anomaly and it humbled multiple coaches. Ange won big for them and pragmatically focused on what he needed to.
