Arne Slot has finally responded publicly to the recent comments made by Mohamed Salah regarding Liverpool’s playing style and the club’s loss of its famous “heavy metal football” identity.
The Liverpool manager was asked directly about Salah’s remarks during his latest press conference and firmly defended both his football philosophy and the team’s achievements this season.
Slot immediately pushed back on the suggestion that Salah dislikes his tactical approach.
“You are assuming… you say he wants to play that [heavy metal] style and you say it is not mine.”
The Dutchman then pointed towards Liverpool’s title success as evidence his methods have already worked.
“It led to us winning the league last year, my style, which Mo [Salah] was happy to play.”
Slot also stressed that despite any public discussion, both he and Salah ultimately want the same thing.
“We both want what is best for Liverpool Football Club.”
That line may calm some fears surrounding a possible major fallout between player and manager.
However, it is clear the wider debate around Liverpool’s footballing identity is still far from disappearing.
The Liverpool boss also insisted his team are still capable of competing for the biggest trophies moving forward.
“Our team this season brought the title back last season and we would like to challenge for that next season.”
But perhaps the most revealing part of Slot’s response came when discussing how football itself has changed.
“Football has! I said this many times.”
The manager argued the Premier League is now far more competitive tactically and physically than it was several years ago.
Slot even used Manchester City as an example.
“I know think 5/6 years ago Man City v Brentford might have been 5 or 6-0 to City, so this league is now so strong.”
For Slot, modern football now requires a different tactical balance if Liverpool want to consistently compete against elite opposition.
That includes more structure, more control and more tactical adaptability.
However, many Liverpool supporters remain conflicted about that explanation.
While fans understand football evolves constantly, many still feel Liverpool lost part of their emotional intensity and attacking aggression this season.
The fast, fearless and chaotic football associated with the Jürgen Klopp era often felt missing.
That is why Salah’s comments resonated so strongly with supporters in the first place.
Still, Slot insists Liverpool can evolve without abandoning their identity completely.
“So we need to compete and also play our brand that the fans want to see and I want my team to play!”
That balancing act may ultimately define Slot’s future at Liverpool.
Because supporters do not just want success.
They want Liverpool to feel like Liverpool again.
And next season, the pressure on Slot to deliver both results and identity may become bigger than ever.
