Roy Keane: Comparing Arteta to Jurgen Klopp Is ‘Out of Hand’

22 May

Roy Keane has passionately defended Jürgen Klopp amid growing debates comparing the former Liverpool boss with Mikel Arteta.

Following Arsenal’s recent Premier League title success, conversations have intensified about where Arteta now ranks among the elite managers in modern football.

But Keane believes comparing the Spaniard to Klopp at this stage is massively premature.

Speaking on the debate, Keane reportedly said:

“Why should this even be a debate in the first place.”

And while Keane praised Arteta’s work, he made it very clear he believes Klopp operates on an entirely different level historically.

“Mikel Arteta is a good manager despite being the latest Premier League champion and I respect that but being compared to Jurgen Klopp is out of hand.”

Keane went on to praise Klopp’s tactical brilliance and his achievements rebuilding Liverpool from scratch.

“Tactically and professionally he’s the best and better manager ahead of Mikel Arteta.”

For many Liverpool supporters, that opinion will strongly resonate.

Because Klopp did not inherit a dominant football machine at Liverpool.

He built one.

When Klopp arrived at Anfield in 2015, Liverpool were far from Europe’s elite.

The German transformed the culture, mentality and identity of the football club over several years.

He developed players.

Rebuilt the squad.

Created one of the most feared pressing teams in world football.

And consistently competed with Pep Guardiola’s historic Manchester City side.

Keane also highlighted Klopp’s achievements in European football.

“Competing and reaching the highest levels in European competition many times with a better squad he produced from scratch…”

That point is particularly important.

Klopp reached multiple Champions League finals and delivered Liverpool’s sixth European Cup while often operating against clubs with superior financial power.

Keane also referenced Guardiola’s long-standing admiration for Klopp.

“As Pep Guardiola always say Jurgen Klopp push him to be a better manager.”

That mutual respect between two of the modern game’s greatest managers has always stood out.

Guardiola himself repeatedly described Klopp as one of the toughest rivals of his entire career.

None of this is intended to dismiss Arteta.

Winning the Premier League is a huge achievement and Arsenal’s progress under him has been impressive.

But many feel Keane’s wider point is fair:

Arteta is still only at the beginning of his managerial journey.

Klopp’s legacy was built over years of elite competition, trophies, tactical evolution and emotional connection with supporters.

For Liverpool fans especially, Klopp will always represent far more than silverware.

He restored belief.

He rebuilt Liverpool into European giants again.

And in the eyes of many supporters, there is simply no comparison yet between Klopp’s legacy and anyone still early in their managerial career.
