Liverpool Need New Signings, Not More Departures

13 Jun

Liverpool supporters have spent much of the summer discussing who might arrive at Anfield.

Increasingly, however, the conversation seems to be shifting towards who could leave.

And that is becoming a problem.

Fresh speculation surrounding Cody Gakpo’s future is only the latest example.

Reports have linked the Dutch forward with a number of clubs across Europe, while suggestions that he could be open to a move have naturally caused concern among supporters.

Whether the rumours are accurate remains to be seen.

But the bigger issue is this:

Liverpool cannot afford to keep losing players.

A Summer Already Defined by Change

This has already been a summer full of uncertainty.

Questions have surrounded several senior figures.

Contract situations have dominated headlines.

And supporters have spent months debating the futures of key players.

At some point, the focus has to shift.

Liverpool need to start strengthening the squad rather than constantly discussing departures.

Because every player who leaves creates another problem that needs solving.

Cody Gakpo Is Not Easily Replaced

Gakpo may divide opinion among supporters, but there is no denying his quality.

The Dutch international remains one of Liverpool’s most versatile attackers.

He can play:

  • On the left wing
  • Through the middle
  • Across multiple attacking systems

And while consistency has sometimes been an issue, players with his level of talent are not easy to replace.

If Liverpool were to lose Gakpo, they would immediately need another forward.

That means another transfer fee.

Another adaptation period.

And another position requiring attention.

How Many Players Can Liverpool Lose?

That is the question supporters are increasingly asking.

Every summer involves change.

That is normal.

But there comes a point where too much change becomes destabilising.

Liverpool are already trying to build momentum under Andoni Iraola.

The new head coach needs stability.

He needs players to work with.

And he needs time to implement his ideas.

Constantly losing important members of the squad makes that process far more difficult.

The Squad Needs Depth

One of the biggest lessons from recent seasons is that Liverpool need more depth, not less.

Injuries.

Fixture congestion.

International tournaments.

All place huge demands on modern squads.

The answer is not to keep reducing the number of quality options available.

It is to increase them.

That is why many supporters believe Liverpool’s priority should be adding players rather than selling them.

A Message to the Hierarchy

Supporters understand that not every player can stay forever.

Football does not work like that.

However, there is growing frustration whenever another exit rumour emerges before significant additions have arrived.

Liverpool need defenders.

Liverpool need attacking depth.

Liverpool need competition across the squad.

What supporters want to see now is action in the transfer market that strengthens the team.

Not more speculation about departures.

Time to Focus on Arrivals

The transfer window is still open.

There is plenty of time for Liverpool to improve the squad.

But if the club wants supporters to feel optimistic about the season ahead, the emphasis now needs to be on who is coming through the door.

Because Liverpool’s future will not be built by constantly replacing players.

It will be built by assembling a stronger squad than the one that finished last season.

And right now, that means signings.

Not departures.
