Virgil van Dijk’s Remarkable Season Deserves Far More Recognition

1 Jun

In a season filled with disappointment, uncertainty and criticism, one Liverpool player quietly achieved something truly extraordinary.

Virgil van Dijk became the oldest player in Premier League history to play every single minute of a league season.

At 34 years old, the Liverpool captain completed all 38 matches without missing a single minute.

An incredible achievement.

And one that deserves far more recognition than it has received.

The statistic becomes even more impressive when viewed in the context of Liverpool’s season.

This was not a settled team.

This was not a side operating with consistency around him.

Far from it.

Throughout the campaign, Van Dijk found himself playing alongside a variety of defensive partners as injuries, suspensions and form issues forced constant changes.

Yet regardless of who lined up beside him, he remained the one constant.

The leader.

The organiser.

The player holding everything together.

The instability behind him only made the task harder.

Liverpool rotated through multiple goalkeepers throughout the season.

In previous years, defenders have benefitted from building strong relationships and understanding with the goalkeeper behind them.

Van Dijk rarely had that luxury.

Different goalkeepers.

Different communication styles.

Different strengths and weaknesses.

And yet he continued to perform.

Then there was the midfield.

For large parts of the season, Liverpool’s midfield offered little protection to the back four.

Opponents were often able to attack Liverpool’s defence directly.

Transitions became a recurring problem.

The gaps between midfield and defence frequently looked far too large.

Many defenders would have struggled under those circumstances.

Van Dijk simply carried on.

Perhaps that is why his performances became underrated.

Supporters have become so accustomed to his excellence that it is almost taken for granted.

When he performs well, it is expected.

When Liverpool concede, the criticism often arrives immediately.

But the reality is that he was one of the few Liverpool players who maintained a consistently high level throughout the campaign.

His leadership also deserves praise.

This was a difficult season.

Results deteriorated.

Questions emerged over the manager.

Several senior players faced uncertain futures.

The dressing room reportedly became increasingly tense.

Yet throughout it all, Van Dijk remained the face of the football club.

The captain continued to front up after defeats.

Continued to lead on the pitch.

And continued to carry the responsibility that comes with wearing the armband.

The easiest thing to do after a disappointing season is criticise everybody.

But not every player deserves to be placed in the same category.

Liverpool may have fallen short collectively, but individually Van Dijk produced a campaign that deserves enormous respect.

Playing every minute of a Premier League season at 34 years old is remarkable enough on its own.

Doing so amidst constant defensive changes, goalkeeper rotation and limited midfield protection makes it even more impressive.

Liverpool’s season will not be remembered fondly.

But when supporters look back on it, they should remember one thing.

While many things around him changed, one thing never did.

Virgil van Dijk turned up every single week.

And in a difficult season, that consistency deserves recognition.
