One of the biggest reasons for optimism surrounding Liverpool ahead of the new season has nothing to do with transfer rumours.
It has nothing to do with Yan Diomande.
Or Alex Scott.
Or the next player linked with a move to Anfield.
Instead, Liverpool’s greatest strength next season could be something much simpler.
Competition for places.
For the first time in several years, Andoni Iraola looks set to inherit a squad where very few players can afford to become comfortable.
And that is exactly how elite teams are built.
Every Position Has Genuine Competition
Look across the Liverpool squad and it quickly becomes clear.
Almost every position has multiple players capable of challenging for a starting place.
In attack:
● Alexander Isak
● Cody Gakpo
● Florian Wirtz
● Víctor Muñoz
● Federico Chiesa
Hugo Ekitike’s unfortunate long-term injury has reduced Liverpool’s options in the short term, but it also creates opportunities for others to step forward.
When Ekitike returns, Iraola will have even greater depth to work with.
A Midfield Full of Quality
The midfield is perhaps the best example.
Liverpool currently boast:
● Alexis Mac Allister
● Ryan Gravenberch
● Dominik Szoboszlai
● Curtis Jones
● Stefan Bajčetić
● Wataru Endo
Each player brings something different.
Some offer creativity.
Some provide defensive security.
Others bring energy and ball-carrying ability.
For Iraola, selecting his midfield may become one of the most difficult decisions every week.
That is exactly the kind of selection headache every top manager wants.
Even the Defence Looks Stronger
Defensively, Liverpool also appear better equipped.
Virgil van Dijk remains the leader.
Joe Gomez offers valuable versatility across the back line.
Milos Kerkez has brought fresh energy to the left side of defence.
Jeremie Frimpong looks set to make the right-back position his own while Conor Bradley continues his recovery from a long-term injury.
Should Liverpool add another centre-back before the transfer window closes, competition across the defensive unit will only become stronger.
Young Players Will Also Push
It is not only senior players creating competition.
Liverpool’s academy continues producing exciting prospects.
Rio Ngumoha.
Trey Nyoni.
Josh Abe.
Stefan Bajčetić.
Every one of them knows there is a genuine pathway into the first team under Andoni Iraola.
That means established players cannot afford complacency.
The next generation is already knocking on the door.
A Good Problem to Have
Supporters naturally spend the summer discussing transfers.
Who should arrive?
Who should leave?
But sometimes the biggest improvements come from within.
If every player knows they must fight for their place, standards naturally rise.
Training becomes more competitive.
Performances become more consistent.
That is why Liverpool’s biggest strength next season may not simply be new signings.
It may be that almost every position has genuine competition, driving higher standards throughout the squad.
If Andoni Iraola can harness that competition effectively, Liverpool could once again become one of Europe’s most relentless teams.
