Liverpool Fans Should Expect to See Much More of Rio Ngumoha Next Season

25 Jun

For a long time, Rio Ngumoha has been viewed as one of Liverpool’s brightest academy prospects.
Now, Liverpool supporters may finally be about to see him much more regularly.
Following his impressive performances over the past year and his encouraging displays with England’s youth setup, there is a growing feeling that Ngumoha is ready to take the next step in his development.
And under Andoni Iraola, the timing could not be better.

A Talent Liverpool Rate Extremely Highly
Liverpool have never hidden their belief in Ngumoha.
Since arriving at the club, the young winger has consistently impressed coaches with his technical ability, confidence and willingness to take responsibility on the ball.
Few players his age possess such natural attacking instincts.
His strengths are already clear:
● Excellent dribbling ability
● Pace and acceleration
● Confidence in one-versus-one situations
● Creativity in the final third
● Fearlessness in possession
Those qualities have helped him establish himself as one of the most exciting youngsters in Liverpool’s academy.

His England Performances Have Turned Heads
Ngumoha’s recent performances for England have only strengthened the belief that he is ready for greater responsibility.
Even when playing against older and more experienced opponents, he has consistently shown confidence and maturity.
Rather than looking overwhelmed, he has looked comfortable.
That is often one of the clearest indicators that a young player is ready to move closer to senior football.

Iraola’s Style Could Be Perfect for Him
One reason supporters should be optimistic is the arrival of Andoni Iraola.
The new Liverpool head coach has built a reputation for trusting young players and rewarding attacking bravery.
His football depends heavily on:
● Direct running
● Aggressive pressing
● Quick transitions
● Players willing to attack defenders
Ngumoha’s profile fits those requirements perfectly.
Unlike some systems where young wingers are encouraged to play safely, Iraola’s football rewards players who force things to happen.
That should suit Ngumoha enormously.

Opportunities Are Opening Up
Liverpool’s attack is also entering a period of transition.
The departure of Mohamed Salah has created opportunities.
Injuries have affected other players.
And competition for places, while strong, is no longer impossible to break through.
That does not mean Ngumoha will suddenly become a regular starter.
But it does mean there are likely to be more opportunities available than there have been in previous seasons.
Cup matches.
Substitute appearances.
Pre-season opportunities.
Every minute matters.

Liverpool Have Been Here Before
Liverpool supporters have seen this story before.
Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Curtis Jones.
Conor Bradley.
Stefan Bajčetić.
All emerged because the club were willing to trust talented young players when the moment was right.
Ngumoha could be the next name added to that list.
The club clearly believe he has the ability.
The challenge now is giving him opportunities to prove it.

Patience Remains Important
As exciting as Ngumoha’s future appears, patience remains essential.
He is still very young.
Development is rarely linear.
There will be setbacks as well as successes.
Liverpool supporters should resist the temptation to place unrealistic expectations on him too quickly.
The goal should be steady progression.
Not immediate stardom.

The Time Is Coming
What feels increasingly clear, however, is that Ngumoha is moving closer to the first team.
The combination of his talent, recent performances and Iraola’s arrival has created a situation where opportunities are likely to increase.
Liverpool supporters should not expect him to suddenly play every week.
But they should expect to see much more of him.
And if his development continues at its current rate, Rio Ngumoha could become one of the most exciting stories of Liverpool’s season.
