Bruno Guimarães Wants Arsenal – But Should Liverpool Have Been in the Race?

8 Jul

One of the biggest transfer stories of the summer has emerged from The Athletic, with David Ornstein reporting that Bruno Guimarães has informed Newcastle United of his desire to leave and join Arsenal.
According to the report, Arsenal are stepping up their pursuit and are prepared to offer a package worth up to £60 million, although no club-to-club negotiations have yet taken place. Newcastle, meanwhile, are maintaining their stance that they do not wish to entertain offers for the Brazilian midfielder.
For Liverpool supporters, however, the story raises another question.
Why weren’t Liverpool seriously in the conversation?

A Midfielder Built for the Premier League
There is little doubt about Bruno Guimarães’ quality.
Since arriving in England, he has established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders.
He offers the complete package:
● Defensive intelligence
● Excellent passing range
● Ball-carrying ability
● Leadership
● Aggression
● Top-level Premier League experience
At 28 years old, he is in his prime and has already shown he can perform consistently at the highest level.

Exactly the Profile Liverpool Need?
Liverpool already possess an impressive midfield.
Florian Wirtz, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai provide enormous quality.
Yet Guimarães would bring something slightly different.
He is a midfielder capable of controlling games while also adding steel and physicality.
He rarely looks flustered under pressure and has become one of Newcastle’s most influential players.
If Andoni Iraola wants Liverpool to dominate both physically and technically, Guimarães appears to tick every box.

Proven Rather Than Potential
Much of Liverpool’s recruitment strategy has focused on younger players with room to develop.
There is obvious logic behind that approach.
However, there are times when signing a proven Premier League performer can accelerate a team’s progress.
Guimarães falls firmly into that category.
There would be virtually no adaptation period.
He already understands the league, the intensity and the expectations.

The Financial Reality
Of course, there is another side to the debate.
A deal of around £60 million, combined with substantial wages, represents a major investment.
Liverpool have traditionally been disciplined in the transfer market, often preferring younger players with higher long-term resale value.
The club may simply believe its resources are better spent elsewhere.
That is a perfectly reasonable argument.

Arsenal’s Gain?
If Arsenal are able to complete the deal, they would be adding one of the league’s outstanding midfielders to an already talented squad.
Liverpool supporters will naturally wonder whether the Reds have missed an opportunity.
Not because Liverpool lack midfielders.
But because players of Guimarães’ calibre rarely become available.

One to Watch
For now, Newcastle remain determined not to sell.
Arsenal have yet to agree a deal.
And Liverpool have not been reported as actively pursuing the Brazilian.
Even so, it is difficult not to feel that Bruno Guimarães is exactly the type of elite, battle-tested midfielder who could have elevated Liverpool’s squad even further.
Whether the Reds deliberately chose not to pursue him or simply prioritised other areas, only those inside the club know.
But if Arsenal do succeed in signing him, Liverpool supporters may be left wondering what might have been.
