Every transfer window seems to follow the same pattern.
Liverpool are linked with another superstar.
Supporters debate whether the club should spend £80 million.
Then £100 million.
Then £120 million.
The assumption is often that success comes from signing the next big name.
I’m not convinced.
In fact, I think Liverpool may already have everything they need to challenge at the top—provided Andoni Iraola can get the best out of the squad.
Liverpool Have Already Invested
It is easy to forget just how much Liverpool have already changed over the past year.
The arrivals of players such as:
● Florian Wirtz.
● Alexander Isak.
● Jeremie Frimpong.
● Milos Kerkez.
● Jeremy Jacquet.
have significantly strengthened the squad.
These are not squad players.
These are footballers expected to become the foundation of Liverpool’s next great side.
Adding another £100 million player simply because one is available does not automatically make the team stronger.
Sometimes it simply creates another selection headache.
Coaching Can Be Worth More Than a Transfer
One reason Liverpool appointed Andoni Iraola was his ability to improve players.
At Bournemouth he consistently developed individuals without spending vast sums.
He made good players look better.
That is arguably the most valuable skill a coach can possess.
Imagine if Iraola improves:
● Cody Gakpo.
● Stefan Bajčetić.
● Rio Ngumoha.
● Trey Nyoni.
● Curtis Jones.
Suddenly Liverpool have added quality without spending another penny.
That is every bit as valuable as signing another expensive footballer.
The Squad Is Stronger Than People Think
Take a step back and look at Liverpool’s strongest XI.
Alisson.
Frimpong.
Van Dijk.
Jacquet.
Kerkez.
Mac Allister.
Szoboszlai.
Wirtz.
Ngumoha.
Isak.
That is a team packed with international quality.
Is it perfect?
No.
Could another signing improve it?
Of course.
But the gap between Liverpool and the very best may not be as large as some people believe.
The Academy Could Save Millions
Liverpool’s academy continues to produce exciting talent.
Players like:
● Rio Ngumoha.
● Trey Nyoni.
● Josh Abe.
● Jayden Danns.
● Lewis Koumas.
have all shown enough promise to suggest they could contribute over the next few seasons.
If even two or three of those players establish themselves, Liverpool effectively gain several new signings without paying a transfer fee.
That is one of the biggest advantages any elite club can have.
The Right Signing Is Better Than Any Signing
This does not mean Liverpool should stop recruiting.
Far from it.
There are still positions that could benefit from strengthening.
A centre-forward while Hugo Ekitike is unavailable.
Perhaps another centre-back.
Possibly a specialist defensive midfielder.
But Liverpool should never spend £100 million simply because supporters expect another marquee arrival.
The club’s recruitment success has always been built on discipline.
Buying the right player.
Not the most expensive one.
Trust the Process
Supporters naturally become excited by transfer rumours.
That is part of football.
But sometimes the biggest improvement comes from players already wearing the shirt.
If Andoni Iraola can unlock another level from Wirtz, Isak, Mac Allister, Gakpo and the club’s young players, Liverpool may improve more than they would by signing another superstar.
That is why I believe Liverpool might not need another £100 million signing.
They might simply need the manager they have already appointed.
And if Iraola delivers what many believe he can, Liverpool supporters may soon realise that the club’s biggest signing this summer wasn’t a player at all.
It was the man standing on the touchline.
