Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements appears to be continuing, with Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Illia Zabarnyi reportedly emerging as a player of interest.
According to David Lynch, the Ukrainian international is on Liverpool’s radar, with both Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola already familiar with the defender from their time at Bournemouth.
While no formal approach has been made, the report suggests the situation could develop if Paris Saint-Germain become willing to sanction his departure.
A Player Liverpool Already Know Well
One of the most intriguing aspects of the story is the existing relationship between Zabarnyi and key figures at Liverpool.
Both Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola worked closely with the defender during their respective spells at Bournemouth.
That familiarity is often invaluable in recruitment.
Rather than relying solely on scouting reports and statistics, Liverpool’s decision-makers already know:
● His personality.
● His professionalism.
● His tactical understanding.
● His ability to cope with the Premier League.
● His strengths and areas for development.
That existing knowledge could make Liverpool more confident should an opportunity arise.
Premier League Proven
Unlike many defenders linked with Liverpool this summer, Zabarnyi would not require time to adapt to English football.
He has already demonstrated his ability in the Premier League, impressing with his calmness in possession, positional awareness and physical presence.
At just 23 years old, he combines youth with valuable top-flight experience, making him an attractive long-term option.
A Good Fit for Iraola
Zabarnyi’s profile appears well suited to the football Andoni Iraola wants Liverpool to play.
The Spaniard demands defenders who are comfortable defending large spaces, pressing aggressively and building attacks from the back.
Zabarnyi has already shown he can operate within that type of system.
That could reduce the adaptation period significantly if Liverpool ever decided to pursue a deal.
Will PSG Sell?
The biggest question is whether Paris Saint-Germain would be prepared to let him leave.
At present, there is no indication that the French champions are actively looking to sell.
However, football changes quickly.
Should PSG strengthen in defence or alter their squad plans, Liverpool could be ready to move.
For now, the situation appears to be one Liverpool are monitoring rather than actively pursuing.
Liverpool Continue to Assess Their Options
With the transfer window still open, Liverpool are expected to keep assessing a number of defensive targets.
The club have already strengthened at centre-back, but adding another high-quality option remains a possibility if the right opportunity presents itself.
Illia Zabarnyi certainly fits Liverpool’s recruitment profile:
● Young.
● Premier League proven.
● Comfortable on the ball.
● Physically strong.
● Already familiar with Iraola’s methods.
That combination makes him a player worth watching over the coming weeks.
If PSG’s stance changes, Liverpool could already have the groundwork in place to act quickly.
