Rio Ngumoha Ready to Play on Either Wing as Liverpool Starlet Targets Bigger Role

23 Jul

Rio Ngumoha has sent a clear message ahead of the new season.

The exciting Liverpool youngster has revealed he is happy to play on either wing, insisting he has become increasingly comfortable operating from the right-hand side of the attack.

Speaking to the club’s official media, Ngumoha said:

“Everyone knows I can play on the left, but on the right I feel like I’m improving and I’m getting better. Yeah, definitely off the left and the right this season.”

For Liverpool supporters, those comments are another encouraging sign that one of the club’s brightest young talents is preparing to make a bigger impact during the 2026/27 campaign.

A Valuable Asset for Iraola

Versatility is something Andoni Iraola values enormously.

Throughout his managerial career, he has relied on wide players who can switch flanks, attack defenders from different angles and adapt during matches.

Ngumoha’s willingness to play on either side therefore makes him an even more attractive option.

Rather than being limited to one position, he could provide competition across Liverpool’s front line.

Improving on the Right

Ngumoha has generally been viewed as a natural left winger, where he can cut inside onto his stronger foot and attack goal.

However, his comments suggest he has worked hard to become equally effective on the opposite flank.

That development could prove important.

Playing on the right allows him to:

  • Stretch defences.
  • Deliver crosses from wider areas.
  • Attack the byline.
  • Create different passing angles.
  • Become less predictable.

For a young attacker, becoming comfortable in multiple positions is a major step in his development.

More Opportunities Ahead?

With Liverpool continuing to reshape their attack following Mohamed Salah’s departure, opportunities could arise for several young players.

Ngumoha has already impressed during pre-season and has shown enough quality to suggest he is capable of pushing for first-team minutes.

Being able to play on either wing only strengthens his case.

Managers are far more likely to trust players who can solve multiple tactical problems.

Confidence Growing

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Ngumoha’s comments is his confidence.

Rather than seeing the right wing as unfamiliar territory, he believes he is actively improving there.

That mindset is exactly what Liverpool supporters want to hear from one of the academy’s most exciting prospects.

Young players develop fastest when they embrace new challenges rather than avoid them.

A Bright Future

Liverpool supporters have been excited about Ngumoha for some time.

His pace, dribbling ability and fearlessness have already caught the eye at academy level, while his performances on bigger stages suggest he is ready for the next step.

If he continues developing on both flanks, he could become an even more valuable player for Liverpool in the years ahead.

Ready for the Challenge

The competition for places at Liverpool remains fierce.

Nothing will be handed to Ngumoha.

But by showing a willingness to play wherever the team needs him, he has already demonstrated an attitude that managers appreciate.

Whether on the left or the right, Liverpool supporters will hope this is the season Rio Ngumoha begins to establish himself as a genuine first-team option.
