The Cody Gakpo situation at Liverpool is becoming increasingly interesting.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham remain absolutely on it for Gakpo, with Spurs continuing to push for a deal.
Romano has also suggested that Gakpo’s Liverpool future could be decided in the coming days if the two clubs can reach an agreement. Recent reporting has indicated that personal terms aren’t the main obstacle — the crucial issue is whether Liverpool are prepared to sanction the transfer and agree a financial package with Tottenham.
And that leaves Liverpool with a huge decision to make.
Liverpool don’t want to lose Gakpo
This is the important part.
Liverpool aren’t actively trying to get rid of Cody Gakpo.
He’s had a strong pre-season under Andoni Iraola and has shown that he can be an extremely useful player in this new system.
He’s also one of the few experienced attacking options Liverpool currently have.
So why would they sell him?
The answer is simple:
Money and squad balance.
If Tottenham make an offer Liverpool believe is too good to refuse, the club could potentially use that money to strengthen elsewhere.
👀 Barcola could hold the key
The most interesting part of this whole situation is Bradley Barcola.
Liverpool are still pushing to sign the PSG winger, while Tottenham’s pursuit of Gakpo could depend partly on what happens with Liverpool’s own attacking recruitment.
If Liverpool manage to bring Barcola to Anfield, suddenly the club have another elite attacking option.
That could make Gakpo’s departure easier to accept.
But if Barcola doesn’t arrive?
I’d be extremely reluctant to let Gakpo leave.
Liverpool would potentially be weakening an already stretched attack.
What is Gakpo worth?
This is where Liverpool need to be very careful.
Tottenham have already been spending heavily on attacking reinforcements, and they clearly believe Gakpo is another player who can improve their squad.
Liverpool shouldn’t sell him cheaply.
He’s a proven Premier League player, a Netherlands international and someone who can play multiple positions.
If Spurs want him badly enough, they need to pay a premium.
Recent reports have suggested Liverpool’s valuation could be upwards of £60m, with the Reds not actively looking to sell unless a significant offer arrives.
Iraola has a decision too
There’s also the manager’s perspective.
Iraola reportedly likes what he’s seen from Gakpo during pre-season.
And I can understand why.
Gakpo gives him tactical flexibility.
He can play wide.
He can move centrally.
He can operate as a striker if needed.
And with Liverpool already dealing with injuries and a lack of depth in certain attacking positions, having a player like Gakpo could prove invaluable.
But what if the offer is huge?
This is where I would at least listen.
If Tottenham come in with a £70m-£80m+ package, Liverpool would have a serious decision to make.
Not because Gakpo isn’t good enough.
But because that kind of money could potentially fund another major attacking addition.
However, Liverpool would have to make sure the replacement is actually secured first.
There would be no point selling Gakpo and then discovering they can’t land Barcola or another winger.
That would leave Iraola with fewer options rather than more.
The next few days could decide Gakpo’s future
Tottenham are still pushing.
Liverpool are considering their position.
And Gakpo’s future could now depend on whether the clubs can agree a financial package.
For me, the answer is simple:
If Barcola arrives and Tottenham pay a huge fee, consider it.
If Barcola doesn’t arrive, keep Gakpo.
Liverpool are trying to compete across four competitions.
They need quality and depth.
And Cody Gakpo gives Iraola both.
Tottenham may be absolutely determined to sign him.
But Liverpool shouldn’t make it easy for them.
