Liverpool could be considering one more late move before the transfer window closes.
According to Sky Sport Germany, the Reds are interested in Stuttgart winger Jamie Leweling, with Everton also monitoring the 25-year-old.
And with Liverpool still looking for attacking options, this is certainly a name worth watching.
Liverpool looking at Leweling
Leweling is a versatile attacking player who can operate on either flank.
That immediately makes him an interesting option for Liverpool.
The Reds have already brought Bradley Barcola to Anfield this summer, but there has been plenty of discussion about whether Andoni Iraola needs another wide player following the departures and uncertainty surrounding the squad.
Leweling could provide another experienced option.
And his numbers last season certainly catch the eye.
He scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists, giving him 23 goal contributions across the campaign.
Those are impressive numbers.
He could give Liverpool something different
One thing Liverpool need from another winger is somebody capable of creating something when the game becomes difficult.
Leweling has the ability to play on either side, which could give Iraola another tactical option.
He wouldn’t necessarily have to be a guaranteed starter.
Instead, he could provide competition and depth while allowing Iraola to rotate his attacking players throughout what promises to be a demanding season.
With the Premier League, Champions League and domestic competitions to contend with, having another reliable attacking option could prove extremely valuable.
But Stuttgart don’t need to sell
This is where things become difficult.
Leweling is contracted to Stuttgart until 2029, meaning the German club are under no immediate pressure to sell.
And Liverpool aren’t the only club interested.
Roma have already made a significant attempt to sign him, with Sky reporting that their latest proposal was worth €30m plus €5m in bonuses.
That offer was rejected.
Sky also reports that Everton and Liverpool remain interested, while Leweling has yet to make a definitive decision over his future.
How much would Liverpool have to pay?
That’s the big unknown.
Stuttgart have already rejected Roma’s €35m package, so Liverpool would presumably have to make a serious proposal if they wanted to get the deal done.
And this is where Liverpool’s summer spending becomes relevant.
The Reds have already committed huge sums to their new-look squad, including the blockbuster deals for Bradley Barcola.
Would Liverpool really want to make another significant investment in a winger?
Or would they prefer to keep their remaining resources for other areas?
Could Leweling be the final piece?
That’s what makes this interesting.
Liverpool have spent much of the summer reshaping their squad.
But there have still been concerns about depth, particularly after several players left the club.
If Iraola believes he needs another wide attacker, Leweling could potentially be a very useful addition.
He’s 25, has Bundesliga experience and is already producing goals and assists at a high level.
That’s a very different proposition from signing another teenager purely for potential.
Liverpool need to decide quickly
The problem is the clock.
This is no longer a transfer situation where Liverpool can spend weeks negotiating.
If they’re genuinely interested in Leweling, they’ll need to move quickly.
Stuttgart have no obligation to sell.
Roma are interested.
Everton are interested.
And the player himself hasn’t yet made a definitive decision.
Sky’s reporting makes it clear that a move is possible, but there is currently no indication that Liverpool are close to completing a deal.
My verdict
I actually quite like the idea of Leweling.
He’s not a signing that would immediately grab the same headlines as Barcola, but sometimes those are the players who prove incredibly useful over a long season.
11 goals and 12 assists is a very respectable return.
His ability to play on either wing would give Iraola another option.
And at 25, he should be entering his prime years.
The biggest question is whether Liverpool are prepared to pay what Stuttgart want.
With Roma already seeing a substantial offer rejected, this certainly won’t be an easy deal.
But if Liverpool genuinely believe they need another winger, Jamie Leweling is certainly one to keep an eye on until the window closes.
