Liverpool clearly haven’t forgotten about Lamine Camara.
And this could be a transfer story worth watching very closely.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool scouts were in Paris on Friday night to watch Camara in action as Monaco produced an impressive 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool remain long-term admirers of the 22-year-old midfielder.
Considering what happened on transfer deadline day, the timing is particularly interesting.
Liverpool wanted Camara this summer
Camara was one of the midfielders Liverpool were linked with during the summer transfer window.
But the Reds didn’t get a deal done.
Chelsea came extremely close to signing the Senegal international, with a deal worth around £47 million reportedly agreed with Monaco before the French club pulled out at the last moment.
Liverpool’s interest, however, hasn’t disappeared.
Quite the opposite.
They’re still watching him.
And they were there in person to see him against PSG.
And Camara didn’t disappoint
If Liverpool wanted to see how Camara would react after the disappointment of his collapsed Chelsea transfer, they couldn’t have asked for much more.
Monaco came from behind to beat PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes, maintaining their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season.
Camara played a significant role.
Reports from the game highlight his work defensively, with 12 duels won and seven tackles won, while he also completed 35 of 38 passes.
That’s exactly the sort of performance that will have caught Liverpool’s attention.
And this is the position Liverpool still need
For me, this is what makes the Camara story so interesting.
Liverpool didn’t sign a traditional defensive midfielder during the summer.
And I still think that’s one of the biggest weaknesses in the squad.
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are both excellent footballers.
Ryan Gravenberch is an excellent footballer.
But Liverpool don’t really have that obvious midfielder whose first instinct is to protect the defence, win the ball and break up attacks.
Camara fits much more naturally into that profile.
He is aggressive.
He tackles.
He covers ground.
He can win duels.
And he is comfortable enough on the ball to contribute when Liverpool have possession.
Could 2027 be the year?
This is where things get really interesting.
TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool remain long-term admirers and continue to monitor Camara closely, with the expectation that his future could lead to a move away from Monaco in 2027.
So this doesn’t necessarily mean Liverpool are about to sign him.
It certainly doesn’t mean a January transfer is guaranteed.
But it does suggest Camara remains firmly on Liverpool’s radar.
And after watching him dismantle PSG’s midfield on Friday night, I can understand why.
The price could be the problem
Chelsea were reportedly prepared to pay around £47m for him.
That gives Monaco a pretty good idea of Camara’s market value.
If he continues performing like this, that price could rise.
And Liverpool won’t be the only club watching.
Chelsea remain interested despite the collapsed move, while TEAMtalk reports that several Premier League clubs were represented in Paris.
If Camara has another excellent season, Liverpool could eventually find themselves in another transfer battle.
Liverpool should keep watching
For me, this is exactly what Liverpool should be doing.
If they weren’t prepared to make the move this summer, continue monitoring the player.
Watch him.
Study him.
See how he develops.
See whether he can consistently perform at this level.
And if the answer is yes, make the move before his price becomes ridiculous.
Liverpool have already spent huge money rebuilding the squad.
They don’t need another panic signing.
They need players who genuinely fit what Iraola wants.
And Camara could be one of those players.
Don’t forget Lamine Camara
I wouldn’t get carried away and say Liverpool are definitely going to sign him.
We’re nowhere near that stage.
But the fact that Liverpool scouts were in Paris specifically watching a player they have previously been interested in is certainly worth noting.
And after Monaco’s victory over PSG, Camara’s reputation certainly won’t have suffered.
Quite the opposite.
Liverpool were watching.
Camara delivered.
And after his Chelsea move collapsed, the door to the Premier League may still be open.
Perhaps Liverpool could be the club that eventually walks through it.
