A really interesting report from Diario AS claims Liverpool have doubts about Xabi Alonso and actually contacted Real Madrid directly to ask about him.
According to the report, Liverpool wanted opinions on what happened during Alonso’s spell in Madrid before making any serious move.
If true, it shows Liverpool’s hierarchy aren’t just blindly rushing towards Alonso because of his connection with the club.
A lot of supporters see him as the obvious replacement if Arne Slot leaves, but clearly the club are looking deeper into things behind the scenes.
At the same time, it’s hard not to feel Liverpool are risking overthinking this.
Alonso is one of the most highly-rated young managers in Europe and feels like a natural fit for Liverpool in a lot of ways.
The longer uncertainty drags on around Slot, the bigger the chance another club moves first.
And with the atmosphere around Anfield getting worse every week, Liverpool probably can’t afford a long period of indecision either.
Because whether people agree or not, it definitely feels like the pressure is building towards a huge decision this summer.
