Richard Hughes was at Anfield for the draw against Chelsea on Saturday and you do wonder what he made of it all.
Because that performance summed up Liverpool’s season perfectly.
Start well, score, then slowly disappear from the game.
This squad was heavily backed after winning the league last season, so Hughes will know the expectations were nowhere near this low.
Instead of kicking on, Liverpool have gone backwards.
The football feels passive, confidence looks gone and the atmosphere around the club is getting worse every week.
The most worrying thing is that nothing really changes.
It feels like supporters are watching the same game every week now.
Liverpool score and sit back.
The tempo drops.
The opposition grow into the match.
Then Anfield gets frustrated.
The reaction on Saturday felt significant as well.
The boos when Rio Ngumoha was taken off and again at full-time showed how fed up supporters are becoming.
That’s not something Liverpool’s hierarchy can just ignore.
Hughes has some huge decisions coming this summer because right now this doesn’t look like a team moving forward.
And the longer things stay like this, the more toxic the mood around the club is going to become.
