Liverpool’s Loyalty to Slot Could Cost Them Alonso

12 May

Xabi Alonso is reportedly keen to become the next head coach of Liverpool and would immediately enter negotiations if the club made an approach.

But the problem is Liverpool still haven’t made one.

Despite the growing frustration around Arne Slot, both Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are believed to remain firmly behind him.

The two men who appointed Slot still think he deserves more time, despite how badly this season has unravelled.

There’s also uncertainty around their own futures with both reportedly having just a year left on their contracts.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are now pushing hard for Alonso and are increasingly confident they can get him this summer.

That’s what will really worry Liverpool supporters.

Because if Alonso is genuinely available and open to the job, Liverpool cannot afford to just sit back and watch a rival move ahead.

What makes it even harder to understand is that Alonso was apparently admired by people inside the club, but no formal approach was ever made because Hughes and Edwards continued backing Slot.

Personally, I honestly find it unbelievable that the current stewardship at Liverpool can look at this season and still think continuing with Slot into next year is the right decision.

The performances have been poor for months, the football has become passive and the atmosphere around Anfield is getting worse every week.

At some point, Liverpool have to decide whether they are reacting to what’s happening in front of them — or stubbornly trying to defend a decision that clearly isn’t working.
