Why Aren’t Edwards and Hughes Facing More Scrutiny at Liverpool?

12 May

So much of the focus around Liverpool right now is on Arne Slot.

But why are so few people questioning Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes?

Apart from stories about their own contract situations, it feels like they’ve largely escaped serious criticism for how badly things have declined.

They inherited the foundations of a title-winning squad built by Jürgen Klopp and Jörg Schmadtke.

Yet less than two years later, Liverpool look weaker, flatter and miles away from the side that supporters fell in love with.

The biggest issue for many fans is recruitment.

Liverpool spent enormous money last summer and yet the squad somehow looks less balanced than before.

That’s why more and more supporters are starting to question whether the people making the decisions behind the scenes are being held accountable enough.

A lot of fans also believe Edwards’ reputation was built largely during the Klopp era, when Liverpool had one of the greatest managers in the club’s history lifting everything around him.

Now, without Klopp covering cracks, the mistakes are becoming far more obvious.

As for Hughes, there’s a growing feeling among supporters that he looks overwhelmed by the scale of the job.

And with reports continuing to suggest Liverpool still plan to back Slot next season, frustration towards the hierarchy is only increasing.

Managers always carry the blame first in football.

But Liverpool’s problems right now go much deeper than just the dugout.

And for many supporters, Edwards and Hughes deserve far more scrutiny than they’re currently getting.
