Highly-rated Trey Nyoni is increasingly likely to leave Liverpool this summer on loan, with Aberdeen F.C. currently leading the race for the young midfielder.
The Scottish Premiership side have reportedly made Nyoni their top priority ahead of next season and have already contacted both Liverpool and the player’s representatives regarding a possible deal.
Aberdeen believe their style of play and the pressure that comes with playing for a big Scottish club would provide the perfect environment for Nyoni’s development.
At 18, the midfielder is regarded as one of Liverpool’s brightest academy prospects, but regular senior football is now seen as the next important step in his progress.
Nyoni has also attracted interest from Swansea City and Coventry City but Aberdeen are believed to be pushing hardest at this stage.
A move to Scotland could make a lot of sense too.
Young players at Aberdeen are expected to handle pressure, compete physically and play in front of demanding crowds — all valuable experience for someone hoping to eventually break into Liverpool’s first team.
Liverpool fans will also remember that Nyoni would not be the first academy player to make the move north.
Former Liverpool youngster Leighton Clarkson joined Aberdeen in recent years and rebuilt his career impressively there after leaving Anfield.
That pathway could help convince Liverpool this is the right environment for Nyoni as well.
From Liverpool’s perspective, a loan move now feels logical.
Nyoni clearly has talent, but sitting around academy football much longer probably won’t help his development.
The next challenge is testing himself consistently at senior level.
And Aberdeen may end up being the perfect place for him to do exactly that.
