New reports are suggesting there could now be genuine tension behind the scenes at Liverpool following Mohamed Salah’s emotional comments about the club’s identity and culture.
According to club sources, there is a growing belief internally that if Arne Slot allows Salah to start the final match of the season without consequence after publicly questioning standards at the club, it could be viewed as weak management.
And that, according to the reports, could risk Slot losing authority and respect within the dressing room heading into next season.
It is an extraordinary situation developing around one of Liverpool’s biggest modern legends.
Salah’s original message strongly criticised the current direction of the club and called for Liverpool to rediscover the “heavy metal” football and winning mentality that once made them feared across Europe.
Many supporters agreed with him completely.
But internally, it appears there may now be concerns about how publicly those frustrations were expressed.
The situation leaves Slot in a very difficult position.
On one hand, Salah is arguably Liverpool’s most important player and one of the few figures at the club with the status and experience to openly speak about standards.
On the other hand, managers are always expected to maintain authority and control within the dressing room.
Especially after such a difficult season.
What makes this story even more fascinating is that so many Liverpool players publicly liked Salah’s post.
That inevitably creates the impression his message resonated strongly inside the squad itself.
And if there are already concerns about Slot’s authority, situations like this only increase scrutiny around his leadership.
There is also another huge factor that cannot be ignored — supporters would be furious if Salah was dropped for the final game of the season.
With this expected to be his final appearance for Liverpool, many fans will want the chance to properly say goodbye to one of the greatest players in the club’s modern history.
To leave him out under these circumstances would almost certainly create an even bigger backlash towards the manager and hierarchy.
Of course, many supporters will argue Salah was simply saying what the fanbase itself has been feeling for months.
That Liverpool have drifted away from the intensity, ambition and standards expected at an elite club.
Whatever happens next, one thing is clear — this is becoming an increasingly messy and uncomfortable situation for Liverpool heading into the final game of the season.
And with uncertainty already surrounding the manager, transfers and the long-term direction of the club, the pressure around Anfield continues to grow by the day.
