Reports suggesting that Rio Ngumoha may have agreed terms with Bayern Munich back in May have understandably caused concern among Liverpool supporters.
If those reports are accurate, however, it is important to remember the timing.
Any agreement or understanding would have been reached on 26 May, at a point when the football landscape at Liverpool looked very different from how it does today.
At that stage, Arne Slot was still expected to be leading Liverpool into the new season.
A lot has changed since then.
The Iraola Factor Changes Everything
The arrival of Andoni Iraola could prove to be the biggest reason why Ngumoha ultimately decides to remain at Anfield.
One of the defining features of Iraola’s coaching career has been his willingness to trust young players.
At Bournemouth, he consistently demonstrated a readiness to give talented youngsters opportunities if they showed they were ready.
Unlike some managers who rely heavily on established stars, Iraola has earned a reputation for rewarding ability regardless of age.
For a player like Ngumoha, that matters.
A lot.
Liverpool’s Pathway Has Become More Attractive
Under the previous regime, some young players may have questioned whether opportunities would arrive quickly enough.
The situation now feels different.
Ngumoha has already received significant recognition despite limited first-team minutes.
He has been shortlisted for major individual awards and is viewed internally as one of Liverpool’s brightest prospects.
The club clearly see him as part of the future.
Now he has a manager arriving who appears willing to trust youth.
That combination is difficult to ignore.
The Alex Scott Example
Another factor that could influence Ngumoha’s thinking is the presence of players who have already worked under Iraola.
If reports linking Alex Scott to Liverpool prove accurate, Ngumoha would have another voice explaining exactly what it is like to play under the Spaniard.
Scott’s development at Bournemouth under Iraola significantly enhanced the manager’s reputation for improving young talent.
That sort of testimony can carry enormous weight.
Bayern Isn’t Always the Right Move
There is no denying Bayern Munich’s appeal.
They are one of the biggest clubs in world football.
But they are also one of the most difficult clubs to break into.
For every young player who succeeds there, others find themselves lost among a squad packed with established international stars.
At Liverpool, the pathway appears clearer.
Especially if the club genuinely view Ngumoha as one of the centrepieces of the next generation.
One Conversation Could Be Enough
Ultimately, footballers want to play.
And if Ngumoha sits down with Iraola and hears directly how the manager sees his future, it could completely change the situation.
A clear development plan.
A realistic pathway to first-team football.
And the opportunity to become part of Liverpool’s next great team.
Those are powerful arguments.
Stay Put and Grow
The temptation of Bayern Munich is understandable.
But Liverpool are not the same club they were a few months ago.
The managerial change has altered the equation.
And while speculation will continue, there is a strong argument that Ngumoha’s smartest career move is to stay exactly where he is.
Because under Andoni Iraola, the opportunities he has been waiting for may finally be arriving.
