Sammy Lee Urges James Milner Return Under Iraola

12 Jun

As Liverpool’s new era under Andoni Iraola begins to take shape, club legend Sammy Lee has put forward a name that many supporters would love to see return to Anfield.
James Milner.
With Liverpool yet to officially confirm any additions to Iraola’s coaching staff, Lee believes the former Reds midfielder could play a hugely important role in helping maintain the standards and culture that defined Liverpool’s most successful years under Jürgen Klopp.

Iraola has already signed a two-year contract and is reportedly hoping to bring several trusted members of his Bournemouth backroom team with him, including:
● Pablo de la Torre
● Tommy Elphick
● Shaun Cooper
● Tom Webber
However, Lee believes there is also room for someone who truly understands Liverpool Football Club from the inside.
And few people fit that description better than James Milner.

Speaking to Redmen TV, Lee explained exactly why he thinks Milner would be an ideal addition.
“I know Millie from a player when I was with England Under-21s,” Lee said.
“He’s a very demanding professional. He tested me all the time, which I loved. As long as I had the answers for him, it was great.”
That determination and relentless pursuit of standards is exactly what made Milner such an important figure during Liverpool’s modern golden period.

Lee went even further when discussing what Milner could bring to a coaching environment.
“I’d certainly love someone like Millie because he drives standards on and off the pitch.”
“And I think if you speak to Jurgen, he’ll tell you that the likes of Millie and Jordan Henderson drove the ethos, the philosophy and the culture.”
Those comments will resonate with many Liverpool supporters.
Throughout recent seasons, one of the biggest concerns has been the gradual departure of influential leaders from the dressing room.
Milner’s return could help address that.

Lee also mentioned Thiago Alcântara as another former player he would love to see involved.
The former Liverpool midfielder has already been linked with a potential role under Iraola, with reports suggesting the Spaniard is a huge admirer of Thiago’s football intelligence and coaching potential.
But for Lee, Milner’s influence on standards and accountability makes him a particularly attractive option.

The former Liverpool midfielder’s comments also touched on the controversial departure of Arne Slot.
Lee admitted he was uncomfortable with how the situation unfolded despite understanding why the club ultimately made the decision.
“I was not a fan,” Lee admitted.
“But I fully understand it.”
He explained that while he wanted Slot to be given more time, Liverpool’s performances made it increasingly difficult to defend that position.
“I was losing the argument with every performance because, let’s be perfectly frank, it got worse.”

Lee’s criticism echoed the concerns many supporters expressed throughout the season.
Liverpool looked increasingly disconnected.
The intensity disappeared.
And the football often felt unrecognisable compared to the standards supporters had become accustomed to.
“It wasn’t Liverpool-esque. It wasn’t Liverpool type football,” Lee said.
Those comments will undoubtedly strike a chord with many fans.

As Iraola begins assembling his staff, Liverpool supporters will be watching closely to see who joins him.
The club needs tactical expertise.
But it also needs leaders who understand what Liverpool represents.
That is why Sammy Lee’s suggestion has generated so much interest.
James Milner may have retired as a player.
But his influence, professionalism and understanding of Liverpool’s culture could still have a major role to play in the club’s future.
And judging by Lee’s comments, there are plenty of people who would welcome him back with open arms.
