Liverpool supporters have every reason to be excited about the future.
Few clubs in world football can boast attacking talents of the calibre of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
However, talent alone guarantees nothing.
If Liverpool are to return to the very top of English and European football, Andoni Iraola must ensure he gets the very best out of two players who could define the club’s next era.
Liverpool’s New Centrepieces
There is no escaping the reality that Wirtz and Isak are expected to become the focal points of Liverpool’s attack.
For years, much of Liverpool’s attacking identity revolved around Mohamed Salah.
Replacing a player of his stature is impossible.
What Liverpool can do, however, is build a new attacking structure around the strengths of their current stars.
That responsibility now falls largely on Wirtz and Isak.
Florian Wirtz: The Creative Genius
Wirtz arrives with enormous expectations.
The German international is already regarded as one of the most gifted attacking midfielders in world football.
His strengths are obvious:
● Vision
● Creativity
● Intelligence
● Movement between the lines
● Ability to unlock deep defences
The challenge for Iraola will be creating a system that allows those qualities to flourish consistently.
At Bournemouth, Iraola’s teams were built around aggressive pressing, vertical attacks and winning the ball as close to the opposition goal as possible.
In possession, that often meant attacking quickly before opponents could reset their defensive shape.
For Wirtz, that could be ideal.
Rather than receiving the ball 40 yards from goal and facing two compact defensive lines, he would regularly collect possession in the inside channels after Liverpool force turnovers high up the pitch.
A typical Iraola move might see Liverpool’s front line press a centre-back into a mistake, with Wirtz immediately receiving the loose ball between midfield and defence before slipping Isak through on goal with a first-time pass.
Wirtz is also at his best when drifting into pockets behind the opposition midfield.
Iraola could use him as a central attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1, giving him freedom to move laterally across the pitch and combine with overlapping full-backs and wide forwards.
The more often Liverpool can create those situations, the more opportunities Wirtz will have to play the decisive final pass or arrive late in the box himself.
Alexander Isak: The Goalscorer
While Wirtz creates, Isak finishes.
The Swedish striker has all the tools required to become one of Europe’s elite forwards.
He combines:
● Pace
● Technical quality
● Intelligent movement
● Finishing ability
● Positional versatility
What makes Isak particularly dangerous is his ability to create chances for himself as well as finish chances created by others.
Under Iraola, his role would likely extend beyond simply occupying centre-backs.
At Bournemouth, the central striker was often asked to initiate the press, force play into specific areas and then attack space immediately after possession was regained.
Isak has the athleticism and intelligence to excel in that role.
When Liverpool win the ball high, his curved runs across defenders could become a major weapon.
For example, if Wirtz receives possession between the lines on the left side of the pitch, Isak can dart into the channel between centre-back and full-back, creating the kind of passing lane that Wirtz specialises in exploiting.
His ability to drop short and link play also adds another dimension.
If defenders follow him into midfield, he can create space for runners beyond him; if they hold their position, he has the technical quality to turn and drive at goal himself.
The partnership between him and Wirtz could become one of the most exciting in European football if developed correctly.
Iraola’s Biggest Task
The challenge facing Iraola is not simply finding a place for them in the team.
It is creating an environment where both players elevate each other.
The best Liverpool sides have always been built around partnerships.
St John and Hunt
Keegan and Toshack
Dalglish and Rush
Gerrard and Torres
The hope is that Wirtz and Isak can become the defining attacking partnership of this generation.
That will require structure, balance and tactical clarity.
More specifically, Liverpool must create repeatable patterns that consistently connect the two players.
One example would be using the press to funnel opponents into central areas, allowing Liverpool to regain possession quickly and immediately find Wirtz facing forward.
From there, Isak’s movement in behind becomes the first attacking option.
Another would involve Isak dropping between the lines to receive, drawing a defender out before Wirtz attacks the vacated space around the penalty area.
The most effective attacking partnerships are built on understanding and repetition, and Iraola’s coaching staff will need to develop those automatisms on the training ground.
Pressure Comes With the Price Tag
Big-money players inevitably carry enormous expectations.
Supporters will expect goals from Isak.
They will expect creativity from Wirtz.
And they will expect Liverpool to challenge for trophies.
That pressure comes with representing one of the biggest clubs in world football.
Iraola’s ability to manage those expectations may prove just as important as his tactical work.
The Potential Is Extraordinary
There are very few managers who would complain about having Wirtz and Isak available.
The talent is there.
The quality is there.
The potential is there.
Now it is about turning that potential into results.
If Iraola can build a system that allows both players to thrive, Liverpool supporters could be watching the foundations of the club’s next great team being built in front of them.
And if that happens, the future at Anfield suddenly looks very bright indeed.
