Tottenham Linked With Cody Gakpo – But Can Liverpool Really Afford to Let Him Leave?

22 Jun

Reports linking Tottenham Hotspur with Cody Gakpo have inevitably sparked debate among Liverpool supporters.
After an impressive World Cup in which the Dutch forward reminded everyone of his quality, speculation surrounding his future has intensified once again.
But if Spurs were to make a serious approach, should Liverpool even consider selling?
Personally, I don’t think they can afford to.

The World Cup Has Changed Perceptions
Only a few months ago, opinions on Gakpo were divided.
There was no doubting his talent, but consistency had been an issue at Liverpool.
Then came the World Cup.
For the Netherlands, Gakpo looked like a completely different player.
He scored twice and registered an assist in the 5-1 victory over Sweden, playing with confidence, intelligence and freedom.
It was a timely reminder that Liverpool still possess an outstanding footballer.

A Fresh Start Under Iraola
The biggest reason Liverpool should keep Gakpo is Andoni Iraola.
The new Liverpool head coach has built his reputation on improving attacking players and encouraging them to play with freedom.
His teams are aggressive, direct and constantly looking to attack space.
Those principles suit Gakpo perfectly.
Rather than judging him solely on last season, Liverpool should ask a different question:
What could Gakpo become under Iraola?
The answer could be far more exciting than many supporters imagine.

Liverpool Need Depth in Attack
Even with new signings arriving, Liverpool cannot afford to weaken one of their strongest areas.
The club faces a demanding season across multiple competitions.
Rotation will be essential.
Having players capable of operating across the front line is a huge advantage.
Gakpo offers exactly that.
He can play:
● Left wing
● Centre forward
● Second striker
● Across a fluid front three
That versatility is difficult to replace.

Selling to a Premier League Rival?
There is also the issue of the destination.
Selling an established international to a Premier League rival is never straightforward.
If Liverpool genuinely believe Gakpo still has his best years ahead of him, strengthening Tottenham at the same time would be a significant risk.
History has shown that clubs often regret selling talented players to domestic competitors.

His Best Years Are Still Ahead
At 27 years old, Gakpo is entering what should be the prime of his career.
He has matured physically and mentally, and his World Cup performances suggest his confidence is returning at exactly the right time.
For Liverpool, this feels like the moment to build around him rather than cash in.
Replacing a player of his quality would almost certainly cost more than Liverpool would receive.

My Verdict
If a huge offer arrived, Liverpool would naturally have to consider it.
Every club has a price.
But unless that bid was simply impossible to refuse, I believe Liverpool should keep Cody Gakpo.
The World Cup has reminded everyone of his quality.
Andoni Iraola’s arrival offers him a fresh start.
And Liverpool may be about to discover that one of their biggest attacking signings is not someone arriving this summer—but a player already wearing the shirt.
Letting him leave now, especially to Tottenham, could prove a mistake Liverpool come to regret.
