Liverpool’s plans for the new season have already been complicated by the long-term injury suffered by Hugo Ekitike.
The French striker ruptured his Achilles tendon during last season’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and is not expected to return until 2027, leaving the Reds short of options through the middle.
That situation could suddenly make Cody Gakpo one of Andoni Iraola’s most important players.
More Than Just a Winger
Liverpool have always viewed Gakpo as more than a traditional wide forward.
Since arriving at Anfield, the Dutch international has been used in several different roles across the front line.
He has played:
● Left wing
● Centre-forward
● False nine
● Supporting striker
That versatility has sometimes frustrated supporters, who have wanted to see him settle in one position.
But with Ekitike unavailable, it may prove to be one of Liverpool’s biggest strengths.
Proven in the Premier League
Unlike many players linked with Liverpool in recent transfer windows, Gakpo has already shown he can perform in the Premier League.
He understands the physical demands of English football and has delivered important goals in both domestic and European competitions.
While consistency has occasionally been questioned, there is little doubt about his quality.
Liverpool still regard him as a proven attacker capable of influencing matches in different ways.
A Valuable Option for Iraola
Andoni Iraola’s system places enormous demands on his forwards.
They are expected to press aggressively, make intelligent runs and constantly stretch opposition defences.
Gakpo’s intelligence and work rate make him well suited to those requirements.
More importantly, his ability to move inside and operate centrally gives Iraola tactical flexibility.
Rather than relying solely on Alexander Isak to lead the line, Liverpool can rotate Gakpo into central positions when required.
That could become invaluable over a long season.
Competition Remains Healthy
Although Liverpool may still enter the transfer market for another striker, Gakpo’s versatility gives the club breathing space.
Instead of rushing into a signing, Iraola already has a player capable of adapting to multiple attacking roles.
That flexibility could allow Liverpool to rotate the squad more effectively while maintaining attacking quality.
A Chance to Silence the Doubters
There has been speculation throughout the summer regarding Gakpo’s future, with several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation.
However, Ekitike’s injury changes the conversation.
Rather than becoming a player Liverpool consider selling, Gakpo could become an essential member of the squad.
It also presents him with an opportunity.
If he can establish himself as a reliable central attacking option while continuing to contribute from the left, he could enjoy his most important season since arriving at Anfield.
His Importance Has Increased
Liverpool supporters understandably focus on new signings during the transfer window.
Sometimes, though, the biggest solution is already inside the squad.
With Hugo Ekitike facing a lengthy recovery, Cody Gakpo’s versatility suddenly becomes one of Liverpool’s most valuable assets.
Whether he starts on the wing or through the middle, one thing now appears increasingly likely.
Liverpool will need far more from Cody Gakpo this season.
And the club believes he has the ability to deliver it.
