Few transfer stories have surprised Liverpool supporters more this summer than the suggestion that the club could be willing to listen to offers for Virgil van Dijk.
According to recent reports, Liverpool would be prepared to consider serious bids for their captain.
If that is true, I simply cannot understand the logic.
Because in my opinion, Virgil van Dijk is still the best centre-back in the Premier League.
His Quality Has Never Disappeared
Football moves quickly.
Players get older.
Clubs plan for the future.
That is all understandable.
But none of those things change one simple fact.
Whenever Van Dijk plays, he still performs at an elite level.
His positioning.
His reading of the game.
His composure under pressure.
His ability to organise those around him.
Very few defenders in England can match that complete package.
Leadership Cannot Be Replaced Easily
Replacing Van Dijk is not simply about signing another centre-back.
It is about replacing a leader.
Liverpool have already seen several experienced figures leave over the last few years.
Mohamed Salah has gone.
Andy Robertson has departed.
Ibrahima Konaté has moved on.
If Virgil van Dijk were to leave as well, Liverpool would lose another player who sets standards every single day.
Leadership like that is incredibly difficult to buy.
Still Setting the Standard
Some people focus on age.
I focus on performances.
Van Dijk continues to show why he remains one of the finest defenders in world football.
He rarely looks rushed.
He makes difficult situations appear simple.
And he still gives Liverpool the calmness and authority that every successful defence needs.
There is a reason younger defenders are expected to learn from him.
He remains the benchmark.
Iraola Needs Players Like Him
Andoni Iraola is beginning a new chapter at Liverpool.
Every new manager benefits from having experienced leaders in the dressing room.
Van Dijk understands the club.
He understands the expectations.
And he understands what it takes to compete for the biggest trophies.
Those qualities could prove invaluable as Liverpool adapt to a new style of football.
Selling him now would remove one of Iraola’s strongest allies.
What Message Would It Send?
Supporters have accepted that change is part of football.
No player stays forever.
But timing matters.
If Liverpool were to sell their captain while he is still performing at such a high level, many supporters would inevitably question the decision.
Keeping your best players is often just as important as signing new ones.
And in my view, Van Dijk still belongs firmly in that category.
My View
Reports should always be treated with caution until something concrete develops.
But if Liverpool are genuinely considering offers, I hope they think very carefully before making any decision.
Virgil van Dijk is more than just Liverpool’s captain.
He is still, in my opinion, the best centre-back in the Premier League.
Players of that calibre do not come along very often.
And until somebody consistently proves they are better, Liverpool should be building their defence around him—not preparing to let him leave.
