Liverpool legend John Barnes believes the Reds should remain calm amid continued speculation surrounding Cody Gakpo’s future.
Speaking to Betfred, Barnes suggested that even if Gakpo were to leave Anfield, Liverpool may not need to sign a direct replacement.
Instead, he believes one player is ready to take on even greater responsibility.
Florian Wirtz.
Confidence in Liverpool’s Attack
With Liverpool linked to numerous attacking players throughout the summer, many supporters have questioned whether further reinforcements are needed.
Barnes, however, sees things differently.
“There’s a lot of speculation, but I don’t think we’re lacking from an attacking perspective.”
It is a viewpoint that may surprise some supporters given Mohamed Salah’s departure and the uncertainty surrounding several forwards.
Yet Barnes clearly believes Liverpool already possess enough quality in the final third.
Wirtz Ready for Another Level?
Perhaps the most interesting part of Barnes’ comments centred on Florian Wirtz.
“If somebody was to leave, then I think we will see the emergence of an improved Florian Wirtz next season because I believe he’s a fantastic player.”
Those words will undoubtedly excite Liverpool supporters.
Wirtz already arrives with enormous expectations, widely regarded as one of the finest attacking midfielders in Europe.
Barnes believes the German still has another level to reach.
If that proves to be the case, Liverpool could already have their next attacking superstar.
What About Cody Gakpo?
Barnes was also clear that he would prefer to see Gakpo remain.
“I don’t want to see Cody go but if he did, then I don’t believe we’d have to replace him.”
It is an interesting perspective.
Gakpo has shown flashes of genuine quality during his Liverpool career, but his future continues to be the subject of speculation.
Barnes’ comments suggest Liverpool’s attacking depth—and Wirtz’s potential—could allow the club to cope without immediately entering the market for another forward.
Iraola’s Influence
Much may also depend on Andoni Iraola.
The new Liverpool head coach has built a reputation for improving attacking players and creating dynamic, aggressive teams.
Supporters will hope his football allows Wirtz to flourish in exactly the way Barnes predicts.
If Liverpool’s new manager can unlock another level from the German international, the Reds may already possess the creativity needed to replace much of the output lost through recent departures.
A Different Way of Looking at the Squad
Supporters often focus on who Liverpool should sign next.
Barnes’ comments offer a different perspective.
Sometimes improvement does not come from another transfer.
Sometimes it comes from helping existing players reach their full potential.
Liverpool clearly believe Wirtz can become one of the world’s best.
Barnes appears to agree.
Plenty to Look Forward To
Whether Cody Gakpo ultimately stays or leaves remains uncertain.
What does seem certain is that expectations surrounding Florian Wirtz continue to grow.
If Barnes is right, Liverpool supporters could be about to witness the emergence of one of European football’s elite attacking players.
And if that happens, Liverpool’s attack may already have everything it needs.
