Who Should Be Liverpool’s New Vice-Captain? Four Candidates Emerge as Van Dijk Has His Say

9 Jul

With Andy Robertson’s departure leaving a vacancy in Liverpool’s leadership group, attention has turned to one important question:

Who will become the club’s new vice-captain?

According to James Pearce, Liverpool are considering four senior players for the role:

  • Alisson Becker
  • Dominik Szoboszlai
  • Joe Gomez
  • Alexis Mac Allister

Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed he already knows who he believes should get the armband.

Speaking about the decision, Van Dijk said:

“The new vice-captain? I definitely have my opinion and I always share my opinion.”

While he stopped short of naming his preferred candidate publicly, his comments suggest the discussion is already well underway behind the scenes.

Alisson Becker

Many supporters would argue that Alisson is the obvious choice.

The Brazilian has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers for years and is widely respected throughout the dressing room.

His calm personality, experience and leadership make him a natural contender.

Even when he isn’t wearing the armband, he regularly organises those in front of him and leads through his performances.

Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai also appears to be a strong candidate.

The Hungary captain already leads his national team and has quickly become one of Liverpool’s most influential midfielders.

Still only 25, he represents both the present and the future of the club.

Appointing him would be a statement that Liverpool see him as one of the leaders of the next generation.

Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez brings something different.

This season will mark his 11th pre-season as a Liverpool player.

Few understand the club better.

Having won every major honour at Anfield and overcome countless injury setbacks, Gomez has earned enormous respect through resilience and professionalism.

While he is naturally quieter than some teammates, leadership takes many forms.

Alexis Mac Allister

Alexis Mac Allister is perhaps the outsider among the four names.

However, the Argentine World Cup winner has established himself as one of Liverpool’s most reliable performers.

His intelligence, composure and experience at the highest level make him another credible option.

He leads through his football, and that influence should not be underestimated.

What Makes a Vice-Captain?

The role extends far beyond wearing the armband when Van Dijk is unavailable.

Liverpool need someone who can:

  • Set standards every day.
  • Support younger players.
  • Represent the dressing room.
  • Lead during difficult moments.
  • Help maintain the culture of the football club.

Each of the four candidates offers those qualities in different ways.

Who Gets My Vote?

If I had to choose, it would be Alisson Becker.

His consistency, experience and standing within the squad make him the ideal choice.

Few players command as much respect both inside and outside the club.

That said, it would not be a surprise if Liverpool viewed Szoboszlai as the long-term successor, given his age and growing influence.

A Decision That Matters

Whoever receives the vice-captaincy will become one of the key figures in Andoni Iraola’s new Liverpool era.

Leadership has always been central to Liverpool’s success.

Replacing Andy Robertson in that leadership group is therefore about far more than simply handing someone an armband.

It is about helping shape the next chapter of Liverpool Football Club.
