João Gomes: Could the £35 Million Bargain Solve Liverpool’s No. 6 Dilemma?

15 Jul

Liverpool’s search for a specialist defensive midfielder has been one of the biggest talking points of the summer.
While the Reds have been linked with several high-profile names, one player continues to stand out as both an excellent footballer and a potentially outstanding piece of business.
João Gomes.
With reports suggesting the Brazilian could be available for around £35 million, Liverpool may have the opportunity to solve one of their biggest remaining weaknesses without spending an astronomical fee.

A Position Liverpool Still Need to Strengthen
Liverpool have no shortage of quality in midfield.
Ryan Gravenberch.
Alexis Mac Allister.
Dominik Szoboszlai.
Florian Wirtz.
Stefan Bajčetić.
All bring something different.
What they arguably still lack is a natural ball-winning No. 6 capable of shielding the defence every week.
That is where João Gomes comes in.

Built for the Premier League
Since arriving in England, Gomes has quietly developed into one of the Premier League’s most effective defensive midfielders.
His game is built around:
● Winning tackles.
● Intercepting passes.
● Covering huge distances.
● Relentless pressing.
● Recovering possession.
He plays with tremendous intensity and never appears afraid of the physical side of the game.
Those qualities make him perfectly suited to English football.

Why He Fits Iraola’s System
One reason Gomes makes so much sense is Andoni Iraola.
The Liverpool head coach wants his teams to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch.
To do that consistently, you need midfielders willing to do the hard work.
Gomes thrives in exactly that environment.
He would allow Liverpool’s more creative players greater freedom by taking on many of the defensive responsibilities himself.

Better Value Than Many Alternatives?
At around £35 million, Gomes could represent one of the bargains of the summer.
Compare that to some of the prices being quoted elsewhere:
● Elite young midfielders valued at £70–100 million.
● Experienced internationals costing even more.
Gomes already knows the Premier League.
He is entering the prime years of his career.
And he has shown he can perform consistently at the highest level.
That combination makes the reported fee look extremely reasonable.

The Balance Liverpool Need
Imagine a midfield built around:
● João Gomes.
● Alexis Mac Allister.
● Florian Wirtz.
Or Gomes sitting behind Gravenberch and Szoboszlai.
Suddenly, Liverpool have balance.
Creativity.
Energy.
Defensive protection.
And enough athleticism to compete with anyone.
That is the type of midfield capable of challenging for major honours.

Competition Will Be Fierce
Liverpool are not the only club monitoring Gomes.
His performances have attracted attention across Europe, and any move would almost certainly require strong competition.
That means Liverpool cannot afford to delay if they genuinely believe he is the right player.

A Deal Worth Making?
Supporters often talk about blockbuster signings.
Sometimes, however, the smartest transfers are the ones that quietly solve a problem.
João Gomes may not generate the same headlines as some of Liverpool’s other reported targets.
But if the Reds can secure him for around £35 million, they may have found exactly the player needed to complete their midfield.
Strong.
Aggressive.
Premier League proven.
And seemingly tailor-made for Andoni Iraola’s football.
For me, that sounds like a bargain worth pursuing.
