Harvey Elliott’s future at Liverpool has been the subject of plenty of speculation this summer, but Andoni Iraola has delivered perhaps his clearest indication yet that the young midfielder remains firmly in his plans.
Speaking during pre-season, the Liverpool head coach praised Elliott’s attitude and confirmed that injuries within the squad will give him an excellent opportunity to impress.
Iraola said:
“I think Harvey especially now that we are starting pre-season basically with a lot of players out, I think he will have the best of the chances. During the pre-season we will need him, give him the minutes. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from him in terms of willingness to start strong. Being here, training even one week before with the U21s; I would love to have him in a good place, yes.”
For Liverpool supporters, those words will be encouraging.
Elliott Has a Huge Opportunity
With several first-team players currently unavailable through injury, Elliott has been handed exactly what every player wants under a new manager: a genuine opportunity.
Rather than arriving late for pre-season, Elliott reported early and even spent time training with Liverpool’s Under-21s to ensure he was fully prepared.
That level of commitment has clearly impressed Iraola.
Managers notice those details.
The Right Attitude
One theme that continues to emerge under Iraola is the importance of attitude.
The Spaniard has repeatedly spoken about intensity, commitment and players earning their opportunities through hard work.
Elliott appears to be doing exactly that.
His willingness to return early and give himself the best possible chance of success has not gone unnoticed.
A Fresh Start
Last season was a frustrating one for Elliott.
Despite producing positive performances whenever selected, regular starts were difficult to come by.
That naturally led to speculation about his long-term future.
Now, however, the arrival of Iraola offers a clean slate.
Every player begins again.
Every player has the chance to impress.
And based on the manager’s comments, Elliott is taking full advantage of that opportunity.
Where Could He Play?
One of Elliott’s biggest strengths is his versatility.
He can operate:
- As an attacking midfielder.
- On the right side of midfield.
- In wider attacking areas.
- Between the lines as a creative playmaker.
That flexibility could prove extremely useful over the course of a long season.
Iraola values intelligent footballers capable of adapting to different tactical situations, and Elliott certainly fits that description.
A Chance to Change the Narrative
For months, many supporters wondered whether Elliott’s Liverpool career might be approaching a crossroads.
These latest comments suggest the opposite.
Rather than looking towards the exit, Elliott now has the chance to establish himself as an important member of Iraola’s squad.
Ultimately, the decision will be made on the pitch.
If he performs well throughout pre-season, there is every chance he could begin the new campaign with a far bigger role than many expected just a few weeks ago.
Encouraging Words
Iraola’s comments were not simply polite praise.
Saying Elliott will have “the best of the chances” is a significant statement.
It tells supporters that the manager is prepared to judge players on what they show now—not on what happened last season.
For Harvey Elliott, that could be exactly the opportunity he has been waiting for.
And if he continues to match his excellent attitude with strong performances on the pitch, Liverpool supporters may finally see the best version of one of the club’s most talented young players.
