Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has offered an update on the club’s current injury situation, admitting it has not been the ideal start to pre-season but insisting it is simply part of modern football.
Speaking about the players currently unavailable, Iraola said:
“Some of the players – Ekitike, Bradley, Leoni, others have smaller issues but they’re still not in pre-season and it’s not an ideal situation, but football is always like this – you’ve to adapt to it.”
His comments reflect a calm and pragmatic approach as Liverpool continue preparations for the new campaign.
Not the Perfect Start
Every manager wants as many players available as possible during pre-season.
It is the period where fitness is built, tactical ideas are introduced and new partnerships begin to develop.
Having several important players unavailable inevitably makes that process more difficult.
Among those currently sidelined are:
- Hugo Ekitike
- Conor Bradley
- Gio Leoni
Along with other players carrying minor issues.
While supporters would naturally prefer a fully fit squad, Iraola appears determined not to let the situation become an excuse.
Ekitike’s Absence Still a Concern
The biggest concern remains Hugo Ekitike.
With the striker expected to miss a significant period, Liverpool’s need for another centre-forward has become increasingly obvious.
The Reds cannot afford to rely solely on Alexander Isak throughout a demanding Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup campaign.
Many supporters believe strengthening that position should remain Liverpool’s highest transfer priority.
Bradley and Leoni Expected Back
The news surrounding Conor Bradley and Gio Leoni is considerably more encouraging.
Neither appears to be dealing with a major setback, and Liverpool are expected to manage their workloads carefully rather than rush them back into full training.
That cautious approach makes sense.
Pre-season injuries can easily become long-term problems if players return too quickly.
Iraola’s Mentality Already Showing
Perhaps the most interesting part of Iraola’s comments was not the injury update itself, but his attitude.
Rather than expressing frustration, he simply accepted the situation.
“Football is always like this – you’ve to adapt to it.”
It is a mentality Liverpool supporters are likely to appreciate.
Every club deals with injuries.
The best managers find solutions instead of dwelling on the problems.
Opportunities for Others
The absences also create opportunities.
Young players such as Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, Josh Abe and others have already spent valuable time training with the first team during pre-season.
If senior players remain unavailable for a little longer, those academy prospects could receive even more chances to impress.
Sometimes injuries accelerate the development of young players.
Liverpool supporters will hope that proves to be the case again this summer.
Looking Ahead
Liverpool would obviously prefer to have everyone available before the Premier League season begins.
However, Iraola’s measured response suggests there is no sense of panic inside the club.
The focus remains on preparing the players who are fit, carefully managing those who are not and ensuring the squad is in the best possible condition when competitive football returns.
It may not be the ideal start to pre-season.
But if Liverpool can navigate these early setbacks successfully, they should still head into the new campaign in a strong position.
